New scientific research has shown what many of us suspected: the probability of a car stopping for an occupied zebra crossing is inversely proportional to the value of the vehicle. A University of Helsinki study found that (quote) self-centred men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and lacking in empathy are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes (end quote). All German cars, which is possibly significant?

Do you know, Ive never been:

Brake checked, tailgated, undertaken \ overtaken dangerously, cut up, had the car Im passing speed up as I do so or had the 'v' or 'the bird' flicked at me, had drivers not stop at mini roundabouts or giveway junctions by drivers of Fords, Vauxhalls, Hondas, Citroen, Renaults, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai etc, etc?...

My 2005 Audi A8 is in need of new brake pads. On U-tube the fronts look as easy to do as any other pad change, but the rears apparently need electronic deactivation of the EPB otherwise you knacker the mechanism when winding back the caliper pistons. This means locating and downloading software onto a receptive laptop to interrogate the car's computer via an appropriately plugged cable which I do not possess. I suppose I could obtain one, but even with the help of U-tube it might exceed my electronic capability, the threshold of which, as I suspect for most septuagenarians, is set quite low.. Ho hum, a job for my indie, methinks. Such is 'progress'. Read more

Neighbour has one on his Jag, Car had broken down and brought back to the house on a recovery truck. But the car battery had gone flat - so the handbrake was stuck on, also stuck in Park, and couldn't get the boot open to get to the battery to jump start. The truck blocked my driveway for 4 hours while the recovery company sought assistance and the Jag hund half way on and half way off the truck..

Then a local 10 year old lad said - "since the drivers door is open, why don't you just fold the back seat down and get to the battery that way.?" ...

Henkel zirconium-based pretreatment solution drives technology upgrade

Setting New Benchmark: Henkel Helps SAIC-GM Make New Technological Breakthrough

Henkel Asia-Pacific announced that its automotive team had used Bonderite M-NT 1820 surface pretreatment technology to help SAIC General Motors Corporation Limited (known as SAIC-GM, a joint venture between General Motors Company and SAIC Motor) upgrade its car coating line.

The paint shop at SAIC-GM’s Jinqiao South plant, opened in 2003, used to employ Henkel’s traditional zinc phosphating pretreatment process to handle 300,000 units of passenger vehicles annually, including many premium models such as Buick Regal, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac ATS-L. In May 2016, with full technology support from Henkel China, the paint shop upgraded its pretreatment process with zirconium thin film treatment which went into mass production merely after a one-week commissioning.

Kevin Cunningham, Pretreatment & Elpo Global Subject Matter Expert at General Motors, said to Terry Giles, Business Development Manager of Henkel Surface Treatment Global, “This upgrade is a success across Asia and will be viewed as a benchmark for future development by peers in the automotive manufacturing industry.”

Currently, almost all automotive OEMs are using traditional phosphating treatment processes. With their high-energy consumption, their use of heavy metals, and their creation of substantial solid and liquid waste streams, these processes are increasingly running up against ever-stricter environmental requirements. With a trend of more environment-friendly, cost-effective, high-quality and user-friendly pretreatment technology, Henkel launched Bonderite M-NT 1820 thin film pretreatment, a revolutionary technology that is viewed as an alternative to the traditional phosphating pretreatment. This ground-breaking solution will redefine the surface pretreatment technology in the automotive industry and set new standards for automotive manufacturers.

Bonderite M-NT 1820 surface pretreatment technology, as an alternative to traditional phosphating and passivation treatment, not only allows the treatment to coating process to be undertaken at room temperature without heating, but also fits all metal substrates, thus greatly shortening the process time and saving cost in equipment investment and process control. With Bonderite M-NT 1820, heavy metals, solid waste and waste water are all significantly reduced, thus saving resources and waste treatment cost. Since the processes of surface conditioning and passivation can be skipped, investment in process and equipment footprint are saved and the operational cost including water, electricity, gas and chemicals are reduced. With its excellent performance and strong capability of waste treatment and energy conservation, the Bonderite thin film technology has demonstrated high additional value to Henkel customers.

As a global leading supplier of automotive surface treatment products, Henkel is committed to green and energy efficient sustainable development and has never forgotten its social responsibility – to create more value for customers while helping them reduce environmental footprint. In 2016, Henkel won SURCAR Award for Environmental Footprint for the paint shop application of its Bonderite thin film pretreatment technology in passenger vehicle coating. The prize marks another milestone for Henkel in its pursuit of sustainable development.

Henkel is committed to developing solutions with cutting-edge technologies for automotive coating. Henkel is currently the leading service provider in the Chinese market to help customers renovate their outdated production lines by upgrading technologies, reducing the customer carbon footprint.

What is "RX"? Something American?

Rx was written at the beginning of a prescription. It is an abbreviation for the Latin word, 'recipe' (pronounced 'reseepay'. It means 'take'.

Not keen on that front end, and it looks 'chubby' to me in general. The mkVII looked a lot better, on the outside at least. Hardly an 'affordable' GTi any more either at £34k RRP. Read more

£34k is ridiculous ! It doesn’t look as good as the Mk7 Gti and an extra bit of tech isn’t enough to tempt me. The new Cupra looks a whole lot better especially in estate form.

What is the rev counter doing in the higher gears? - Could this be a slipping clutch, this tend to show up in higher gears to start with and can explain the loss of power in higher gears.

The 1.9 pd (even the 105) is a very tourquey engine and should pull well in all gears. I had the 1.9 pd 100 in a Skoda Superb and it tugged this barge along amazingly well considering.

Hopefully sold my partners car and need to dispose of the private plate.

Can anyone one recommend the best route please ? Read more

glidermania

The plate cannot be transferred to another person, I presume?

DVLA are a mess. I put 'my' plate on my wife's car ticking the box I was retaining ownership. When we sold her car after putting the plate on retention, guess who's name the retention certificate came back in!?

That sentence in isolation means it's difficult to answer exactly but, if the plate's on retention and fee paid, you can sell the title to another person.

Is it just me or do others frequently have to stop themselves from being passed off with the wrong parts.? I feel sorry for independents..

Today I wanted 2 bumper trim clips which are basically a small screw and a plastic plug. I went to the main dealer and showed the parts dept a picture of the fitting which also clearly showed its location. He had no idea what I was showing him and insisted that a completely differed fitting was the correct one. I pointed out he was wrong and this fitting was for another location. Resisting the temptation to say "you are a m****" I left with two completely different fittings which I made fit with a bit of drilling.... Read more
