Hi, i've got a bit of a troublesome problem with my 2006 Berlingo 1.6 hdi.

The problem started about a week ago, when the engine gets warm and you go above 2500rpm the engine starts to splutter and cut out. At first when i took it to my mechanic he couldn't get a fault code. Then the next day on way home it spluttered to a halt and the engine light came on. ... Read more

had this s*** of an engine on the focus 2. Your problem is the fuel filter. Change it, prime it, start the car.
Dont waste your money on fuel pump and injector. The leak is form the copper sealers. Car doesent have a tank pump so you need to manyaly prime the fuel filter after change. Use compresor to presurize tank and when fuel exits filter connect hose to engine

Hi

I was just wondering whether anybody has good knowledge about the 1.4 PD engine (70 / 80 hp) and how reliable it is? We all know the 1.9 is fairly bullet proof, is the 1.4 also tough? Or are there common and well known problems on this engine? Is this engine basically the 1.9 - 1 cylinder?... Read more

I've just come across this thread while searching for information about an EGR valve for a 2010 Skoda Fabia Greenline mk2 1.2TDI 3-cylinder. Said valve has just been diagnosed as broken (at 99000km) by my local mechanic. My question is do all the points made about the 1.4TDI 3-cylinder apply to the 1.2TDI. Would especially like to hear 659's comments.

I have been made aware that if you idle a Diesel engine for a few seconds before turning the engine off, it will help protect and possibly add longevity to the life of this component.

Does anyone know if this is correct or a load of rubbish? Read more

The handbook for our 2010 Honda Accord - our first (and maybe last) diesel car - recommends idling the engine for 10 seconds before switching off after hot running.

Hello All,

I have a Citroen C4 1.6HDi 90 Diesel CRD VTR (59 plate), which recently starting cutting out and displying an Anti Pollution Warning. It was taken straight to the garage from where we had bought the car. They diagnosed the fault as being the HP Pump Sensor, which they replaced and told us the car was ready for collection. Before we had chance to collect the car, they contacted us again to say that the car wasn't fixed as it was still cutting out.... Read more

I bought a 53 plate 1.2 vw polo 2 weeks ago, 57k on the clock and cost £2900. Yesterday one of the front spings broke but i'm more concerned that it has failed to start 3 times and it sounds like it needs a new timing chain kit. It is going back to their garage on tuesday, but will i have to pay for the repair or should the garage be liable? (it came with 3 month warranty) How much is it likely to cost if i have to pay? I'd be really greatful for any advice. Read more

Hmm wish I had known this a year ago !

Now to my cost of collecting car home from Newcastle to Elgin I am about to renew the chain , fortunately its only stretched and prevents the car from accelerating when warm....

Just bought a brand new Avensis D4D (2ltr) after 7 blissful years and 65k miles in a petrol version. Does the diesel have a belt or chain? Can't find any reference in the handbook or service book if there is a belt and when it should be changed. There's also no advice about driving styles to avoid problems with blocked DFPs.

The sales guy told me not to worry about my driving style or supermarket diesel, contrary to everything I've read on this and other sites about modern diesel engines. My daily commute is 45 miles round trip mostly on the motorway with around 20% of that within 30/40 mph zones. I had hoped that there would be a indicator on the dash to tell me when the DPF is regenerating but should I play it safe and drive in 3rd gear for 20 minutes once a week just to be sure the filter is kept clear?... I am touring on the continent with my 2005 CRV 2,2 CDTi (89,000 miles) towing a caravan, which I have done with this car since 2007 when I bought it. Cruising at around 50mph on the motorway the engine suddenly lost power, the engine management light came on and the car went into limp home mode - it would not rev over 2200 rpm.

It was towed to a garage (Bosch Service agent) who said that fault was registered was high turbo boost pressure, but say they have reset the fault code and cannot reproduce the problem, so no faulty parts found or replaced. Of course I'm very worried that it will happen again as I have over 1000 miles still planned on this trip.

Any suggestions anyone who has experienced this before? Read more

Hi, I've just had a similar problem in my 2006 2.2 CDTi whilst towing at 55-60mph on the M5. Not long had vehicle and have towed twice before. Was using cruise control and changing from 6th gear to 5th to see difference in fuel consumption readings when lost power and engine management light came on. Was recovered to services by AA, fault was turbo boost pressure too high. Fault was cleared and could not be reproduced by AA engineer. All settings were well within perameters. Towed rest of journey and return journey with no problems, avoiding using cruise control and avoiding 6th gear and only using 5th over 55mph. No repaeat so far.

Have you had any further problems with yours whilst towing UncleRob?

Hi.

What's the best petrol for this car? Do I really need Shell V-power or does standard Shell unleaded still have the additives? Read more

MikeTorque

It has nothing to do with cost or subconscious or the placebo effect. I can drive the car significantly harder and still obtain better mpg using Millers or 97 RON. Also the engine runs quieter as witnessed by passengers in the car. 95 RON on its own sees mpg fall dramatically whatever the weather or road conditions.

Has anyone had any issues with the paint on the latest golf ? Mine is 2.5 months old and , when I've cleared bird mess from the bonnet with a brand car shampoo and car sponge , small ' swirl ' scratch marks have appeared. I've never had these problems before and washed my wife's Hyundai at the same time , with the same bird markings and no marks were left - and her new car cost 1/3rd of the price of the Golf ! VW are currently referring the matter to their Head Office for , I think , permission to undertake work under warranty to rectify. Read more

Bird poo can scratch, I soak a sponge in warm water and leave it for 15 mins or so, give it another soaking and it falls off.

Seaside bird poo can be seriously abrasive because of a significant sand content....

I use fully synthetic oil in a Citroen C1 and a BMW 530i. Does the precise specification of Citroen, BMW etc really matter that much. Have they got different standards? Europarts had 5 - 30 synthetic approved by Mazda at a very reasonable price about £18. Would this be unwise to use in non Mazda cars. How do the manufacturers come up with their different specifications of the same viscosity oil?

The extended oil drains of upto 2 years are interesting to say the least, As none of the filter manufacturers I've asked would recommend using a filter for more than 12 months. Alot of people have had filters break up and block oilways on vauxhalls with the cartride filters.

Vehicle manufacturers only give the minimum specification required and in the past it was based just on the API or ACEA ratings of the oil. API has been out of date for many years (even the Americans themselves will admit to that)....
