Can anyone tell me where to find the boot light switch on this model? Definitely not the usual visible type!

Many thanks

Well, Nicole is looking for a new car. Brand new car. The criteria is aircon, smallish, aircon, bigger boot than current clio, aircon, good looking, aircon, and "good gears" (whatever that means in nicole speak) - oh and aircon.

So thats a supermini then - Cars considered so far

C3 - dont like
Jazz - to expensive, (my best friend does not like her jazz) (its a honda - dont like honda's)
Pug 207 - dont like - pugs have "bad gears"?
Micra - dont like "its a noddy car" (except the CC - but too dear and no boot)
Polo - like this but too dear with aircon.
Mitsubishi colt -a lot of car for not much money, Trade sales have shed loads at 6.5k BUT boot too small.
Fiesta - Its a ford, its got ford gears

we are left with a shortlist.

Seat Ibiza
New Renault clio
New Toyota Yaris.

So with that in mind, today we had a test drive at out local Seat Dealer. Nice friendly dealer -no pressure, test drive was booked previously and was a "where is your driving license, sign this form, give me your old keys, here are the keys to the car, bring it back in an hour or so and have fun"

So we had a 1.4 ibiza sport for an hour. N was interested in a 1.4 stylance. Well, do we like the Ibiza or what! we do. Its quiet, nippy, roomy, responsive, "good gears", good driving position (Nicole is 5'3" so a good driving postion is hard to find) powerful aircon, and is a real looker.
The sports ride however is too jiggly and hard, and the stereo is rubbish. So if the stylance has a better ride - this is 1st favourite.

Next test drive, is the clio.

Ford and Mazda are linked ... the Fiesta and Mazda2 and Fusion are all built in the same factory in Valencia.

They share the same 1.4 engine, and probably the many other parts too.

Nonetheless, there is something about the Mazda name that gave a greater confidence than buying a Ford, or perhaps it was the the dealership that instilled more confidence. Illogical perhaps, but that's life.

Yep, thats it, Corsa that served me so well over the last 18 months has gone to a new home- a family who have bought it for their son to learn to drive in. Am now the proud owner of a 53 plate SEAT Ibiza 1.2 3-cyl and its fantastic- lots more toys and nicer to drive even though its a cylinder down on the Corsa.
I have one question though- how much power should air-con sap? I only ask because its very nippy with it off, but as soon as its on it goes really sluggish.

It's noticable on mine - on a 3 cylinder I'd imagine it'd be worse.

My brother in law's 2002 Golf's climate control stopped working last night. With climate control on, both cooling fans in the engine compartment do not come on. Air-con technician checked and said air-con system does not need regassing. All fuses are okay. We have tried to access the climate control diagnosis mode without success. The car is currently in Kuala Lumpur and my brother in law needs to return to Singapore tomorrow and it's very hot! Read more

I picked up an 'autocare' digital tyre pressure gauge for £2-3 in a recently refurbished Tesco store that now sells car bits. It displays to nearest O.1 pounds and is black plastic and 14cm long by 2.5 or so wide and quite light . Also the nozzle angle is nicely positioned.

This (one) sample proved to be pretty accurate when compared with my trusted dial gauge and loses no significant amount of air in making the measurement. I am quite pleased with it.

Incidently, I now realise why my other digital gauge loses a lot of air. The rubber was too short that seals the valve end, before the gauge centre spiggot gets to press the valve centre that releases air to the gauge. Having dug out that rubber and glued it in a bit higher up, it too now works OK. Read more

My youngest daughter now 17 wants to start to drive.I have been offered the choice of a K plate 1.6 Mitsubish i colt 85000 miles very clean body work had a head gasket last year and know both owners from new.Or a K plate VW Polo 90000 miles very taty dented body work had a lot of work ,new head gasket last year , suspention front ,clutch drive shaft boots, front wheel bearings.VW Polo £500 too much me thinks and the Colt £800.
We already have a Polo same age/type so can repair myself ,the Colt I have no experience of .What do I need to look out for on the Colt, ie problem areas or known problems.Any help appreciated so I can decide.

Hi Rustbucket. Get some insurance quotes first and bear in mind this will be her car after she passes her test. You may find the 1.6 colt a lot more expensive with L Plates on and a young driver. Regards Peter

Just got back from a "holiday" in Italy which did not start well and got me wondering about crash tests.

Shortly after leaving Milan Malpensa Airport to Bellagio, our hired Fiesta got hit from behind by an HGV.... which in turn was hit by a tanker. No sure what was behind that just recall view from the side ambulance door. Do not have much recollection of the accident (why/how it happened for a start as I must have passed out after impact). Spent the first afternoon in Italian A&E with wife, both having stitches, xrays and for me a CT scan! I have pictures of my brain now.

Italian hospital and police to be congratulated apart from drive to the hire car to collect wrecked luggage.... 140km/h in a 90km/h zone with blue lights and Carabinieri driver on his mobile whilst cars in front eventually moved over! And we only both fitted once the weapons boxes were stacked high in the boot!!!

Thankfully we are relatively well and continued via taxi/limo for the rest of the holiday.

But it made me wonder about crash worthiness of any car when hit from behind... okay I got hit my an HGV so the driver was cheating. But the rear obviously shortened and frighteningly the roof to the rear of the front passengers caved in like a V shape... filling much of the space for passengers. This is what ripped the back of my head open but had someone been in the rear I do not think they would be with us today. It was that bad.

Now I am not criticising the Fiesta because we "walked away" (actually helped in my case with lots of blood from headwound) from being hit by an HGV but with NCAP concentrating on frontal and side impact, what about rear?

Rob (the lucky one I think....

P.S. Another topic... turns out I had dreamt about being in this hospital prior to departure... I recognised some of the interior of the hospital and some staff. Deborah also dreamt of the hospital recently and dismissed it.... That is spooky is it not...! Read more

According to the handbook for the Devon (same engine) , " to clean the pressure relief valve, unscrew the hex headed plug in the block side next to the dipstick location (between the 2 filter connections). Once this is removed the spring is released and the valve can be withdrawn with a suitable probe"

Hope this helps

Most manufacturers have what is usually called an "industrial engine" dept.who are only too happy to supply not just the info but engines and all other car parts;firms like Caterham and others are supported by these people.
