Does anyone have any ideas who to try for this combination?

A bit of detail in case it helps - my sister drives but hasn't yet passed her test. However, in September she will be going to Uni so there's a big push to get her driving properly by then. The car's in Mum's name but I imagine they'd probably drive the car equally when they pass.

The company I'm with insured them last year but are taking the mick this time round. The renewal is ton more despite Mum getting another year's no claims and both people (obviously) being a year older. I've trried the obvious girly ones but with the ridiculous quotes they're clearly not too fussed about our business.

Any help would be much appreciated. Need to beat 600 quid if possible.

Thanks.

FWIW daughter #1 passed a year ago, and in Feb this year I got her 2nd year's insurance down to £430 TPFT on a Punto 55 (gp 3), using confused.com. I thought it unlikely that a broker could better that.

Hi,

I have a 1996 306 and the track rod end need changed.
I have the parts, I can release it from the hub but darned if I can get the end off the rod!!! Seized solid!!!

I thought this was gonna be an easy Sunday job but I have put it back together again until I find a better solution for removal of the end.

Any thoughts on how to release this bear in mind I am working in the arch and don't have much room?

good point about the tracking, get it properly cheked once you've changed the track rod ends.

If you've got an extendanble broom handle, washing line prop or similar then you can get very close to setting the tracking by using this.

Probably a bit too late for you!

It is permissible for MoT purposes to blank the beams with plastic tape (or Beam Deflectors). You may have to quote chapter and verse to the MoT Test tho!

Hi,

I've had a well-known suspension knocking in my Primera for some time and decided to do something about it. This would require replacing both upper links (confirmed being the problem by a Nissan dealer). It seems to be a not very difficult job, however I looked in Haynes manual and it is not clear if the upper link can be replaced without removing a centre link. Has anyone of fellow backroomers tackled this job themselves and advise ?

Manual also says about replacing both nuts that keep the link in place, does anyone actually do it ? Is it just a normal nut of the relevant size that can be bought at any tool shop ?

And finally, dealer wants £100+ for one link, which seems way over the top. I've seen a lot of backroomers recommend QH parts, which they do for £25. I've never actually bought their parts, do they sell to the public directly or through motor factors only ?

Thanks

Thanks oldman. I'll bear advice in mind :-)
It's not that I won't go to motor factors, it is just not that many (if any at all) around my work place, so it is a bit difficult during a week.

Anyway, this is kind of less important part of my question. Hopefull somebody will come along sharing some tips on the job I consider undertaking.

Thanks

Had head gasket replaced on car, including timing belt replacement. Car a 1.4 R reg megane with over 100,000 miles on clock. This the second gasket to be replaced in under three years. ( now of course stupid decision to have gasket replaced)
16 miles after picking up car, the car stopped working. I have been told one of the pulleys has failed (something to do with a key? something or other). This was not part of the work that the garage completed and whilst the garage are sorting the car out for me ( so far) they are claiming to be doing this as a goodwill gesture. Asking me to pay for parts but supplying labour for free. The garage have so far replaced all of the valves on the car but on retesting there is no compression on one of the chambers. Engine misfiring. Now they are stripping car once more to look at pistons/rings.

Should the garage have been able to spot that the pulley was liable to fail within 20 miles of affixing new cambelt?
Should they have changed the pulley as a matter of course as part of a replacement kit?
Should they have noticed something was amiss when the car was "roadtested" before being given back to me?
When the head gasket was replaced the first time would they have done a compression test at this time. ( they are now querying whether the compression was absent before the damage caused by the pulley failing).

All help gratefully recieved. Read more

My son had a similar experience with a Triumph Acclaim with the 1.3 Honda engine some years ago.

The timing belt was replaced by a local independent garage but, the next day, on his 15 mile journey to work, it packed up on the main dual carriageway.

He quickly discovered the timing belt was the problem and the AA removed it to a garage I nominated near my home whilst I took him to work.

An inspection revealed that the timing belt's bottom pulley had been incorrectly replaced and had worked loose. The original garage vehemently disputed that it was at fault, so I requested a report from the second garage.

This was supplied and detailed the poor workmanship involved. Faced with such evidence the original £65 cost was begrudgingly returned.

It also backfired on the original garage's trade. The owner was a member of the same political party social club I regularly visit and the tale of the poor workmanship very quickly spread around the area...:-)

Just about to buy an Octavia with the 2.0 TDi engine (with DSG box). The only criticism is the 'rush' of torque at around 2,000 rpm which can make for fussy progress. I didn't try the car in the wet, but no doubt the traction control will be kept busy.

I then read HJ's note that Superchips transform this engine by smoothing out the spike. In which case, here comes the obvious question......(again?)........

Why don't Skoda/VW/Audi/Seat do it already? Why do I need to spend £550 and jump through insurance company hoops when the manufacturer can surely get it right at outset?

1. so they can introduce that model next year and charge more for it.
2. is the "rush of torque" really a problem? Your Octavia is going to have more torque than my Passat, I guess, but I don't find it a problem, you learn to exploit it.

and I stopped listening after the first digit of the quote from the insurance company (DL) when I asked "what if I chip it to x bhp"?

Just a quick query - my Grandad is thinking about trading in his Honda Accord for a new Astra, but has no idea what to expect since it's got a tiny milage on it (circa 20k IIRC, may be less).

It's X-reg, the SE Executive saloon variant with the 2.0 petrol engine and automatic gearbox.. Full service history etc, perfect condition. He's nearly 90 and finds it a bit big to park and likes the new Astra. It's got all the toys like parking sensors etc.

Any idea what he might reasonably expect part ex?

Cheers,

David. Read more

FWIW, I notice Car Giant is currently offering a 2002 Accord V-Type auto for £6.2K. Does have 50K miles up tho. See it here: www.cargiant.co.uk/cars/search3.asp?Id=290912 . Asking £5.5 for an X-reg might be a bit tall.

I went to local main dealer to have a test test in a 130BHP diesel Mondeo to get a feel for the car and its drive.
I did spot a car which had supposedly reduced from 9495 to 8495.

I did notice the car was less than perfect.. with scuff marks on front bumper and and intrusion mark with foam appearing from inside bumper. I also noted some impefection on the bodywork on the front left hand wing and left front alloy wheel badly scuffed. All this from a main dealer! I thought I would see what I price I cud get for my own car.. being Renault Laguna 1.8RT on a P 2006 plate. I knew i would not get much for it.. but asked £1000 for it.
They offered 320 for it.. I asked for 500 and got it. I then said if they reduce the price to 7500 they would get a deal that day. The sales person then consulted manager after lengthy discussion he agreed!

According to Parkers book price for car being on forecourt is about 9300 for a main dealer and i have secured it for 7500 which is a bargain in my eyes, despite imperfections which can be ironed out.
But thinking back now after paying a deposit to the imperfection on bodywork made me realise that it was bodywork fill and the alloys bady scuffed may indicate it had been in a accident on that side of the car.

Qustion - you reject a car now thinking it had been in a accident.. despite paying a deposit - or forget that knowing it drives ok and that I have a good deal!

Although in a way.. the price for the car i have secured it for is a very good price especially from a main dealer..and parkers price guide indicates 9300 for main dealer forecourt price and 7200 for part exchange so they have not made a profit but cleared the forecourt for cash. Your views please.
