December 2004
Well, I think the 22nd is late enough, especially since my contact with a computer will be increasingly sporadic from now on.
Merry Christmas to all our contributors and readers. This place would not be what it is without you and, by and large, I thank you for that.
Have a good time, and good luck to you and yours in the New Year.
Mark.
Your long suffering, but remarkably fair and reasonable, Moderator.

I have been visiting this site for a year or so, learning loads, and buying a couple of cars at auction with help from the forums - so thank you one and all.
Today I saw HJ for the first time at Blackbushe. Should I have said hello, thanked him for his hard work and advice, or would he, as I suspected, prefer to be left in peace?
Any advice if it happens again in the future..... Read more
'Twas my privilege to meet his HJ-ness at the Ace Cafe
last July and I have the photo to prove it.
>>
It was well worth the visit to meet you both and have a chat.
I was lucky that it was within range from my home.

Growlette is forever jealous.
I cannot comment on this.
our 3 year old fabia 1.4 16v developed starting problems in july. garage solved this problem under warrantee but since then the engine management light has refused to go out.garage has been trying since september to rectify this with the help? of skoda uk.
has anyone else had this type of problem and did it get fixed?
the warrantee is now out but the skoda have agreed to fix it.Question is how long is a reasonable time to fix a car? Read more
Driving one of these things today (the 2 door) made me wonder what on earth people see in them? Slow, extremly noisy, the engine refinement possibly the worst i've ever experienced in 20 years of motoring, awful gearbox not only to try and figure out how to use but the way it's an auto trying to be a manual by dropping rev's and lurching through each gearchange. I felt positively unsafe at 70mph, very unstable, damm frightening when your're overtaken by a lorry spraying up water. Cramped inside, Engine difficult to access and so is washer bottle etc etc
So why the loyal following? Now i'm a petrolhead and I tried hard to like this car but what's the attraction? Owners just love 'em. Just can't see it myself. It advances the art of driving pleasure not one bit. (Mods: not an anti-car rant just at a loss to understand this vehicle)
Any Smartheads out there want to comment?

There is a conpany somewhere that does a bike engine conversion, they go like poo off a shovel apparently.
After the car monitoring system on my Skoda Octavia 2.0 petrol(AQY engine) showed a fault, a dealer pronounced that the air mass meter needs replacing. Having sourced a Bosch replacement, £75 instead of £250+, is this a DIY job, or something that needs to be left to the dealer. Read more
Got from www.eurocarparts.co.uk. It's a Bosch unit. I gave all the details, engine type etc, and it came up with two options. Bosch & a pattern unit. I just hope it's right..
Just a quick point i would like to put forward. Sometimes the make of tyre recommended by the manufacturer is recommended for a reason.
I learnt the lesson the hard way on our X300 jaguar. The tyre size is 225/55/R16. When i needed two rears, i went to our local Merityre, where the fitter told me to fit only the recommended Perilli P6000J (Z) 225/55/R16, and that he would not fit any others on the car. At £125 a shot (even though a lower price than any other outfit for the same tyre) I thought he was trying to scam me, so i went elsewhere and got two Continental sportcontacts 225/55 R16W's. From then for 2 months the car started to tramline from the back end on motorways, making for very scary driving. I went to make sure balancing was fine, and it was, so i went back to Merityre where the bloke took one look, tuttuted and scolded me for not putting P6000's on the car. He told me that the Perillies were designed specifically for the Jaguar (hence the J marking next to P6000 on the sidewall), and that they were different from other tyres as they had re-enforced sidewalls, on a car with a weight and power such as this, at motorway speeds the sidewalls start to deform slightly, leading to tramlining, which can be very dangerous.
The cost of the whole incident was 2 (refurb alloys from our local specialist at 50 pounds a shot, since the tyres were almost new and 80 pounds each, and thus could be used as a spare instead of the space saver), and two new perilli 6000's from the tut tutting gent, who i must say has been fab. Which immediately returned the car's handling back to the original handling.

Do you have to pay extra for this/can your car actually have weights on the rims (my Fiesta Mk6 alloys are rimless, and so only can have weights stuck inside)
Hi guys,
I should be buying a 1.25 16v at some point soon.
I was looking for some advice for this - not just general "Look for blue smoke when starting" as I know this, but specific things relating to this car/engine e.g. I know that early Zetecs had a sticking valve problem, and the 1.4 and 1.6 Zetecs often suffer terminal engine damage at about 50k miles due to 'oil starvation' problems, so anything other information of this type you can give me would be brilliant.
Also, what sort of car should I be looking for? I know just doing short journeys everyday is worse for a car than spending all day on the motorway, so if there are any hints in this area as for what to look for that would be brilliant.
It will be a big investment for me, so I don't want to buy a lemon!!
Many thanks,
Tim

Mark5 had 6 year body warranty: rear wheel arch liners and
wax injection. (but watch as carl said..) The underseal near the
front seat mountings tends to peel off..I removed all loose stuf
and resealed with flexible underseal...
Mark4 only had 3 years body warranty.
Ghia had deadlocks. Ordinary did not.
So if you can find a good Mark5 Ghia it's the
best model to buy imo (looks apart!:-)

What did you use? I used Hammerite underseal and on the wheel arch 'lip' it has started to rust through already! (Done back in the summer) - Should it be rubbed down to bare lmettal or primer?
I seem to recall that it was illegal to display advertising alongside motorways. I know that some people get 'round this by using lorries parked in fields, but yesterday whilst travelling on the M4 I noticed two large wooden hoardings, supported by hay bales, just before junction 18.
Have backroomers noticed any more of these?
Happy Christmas to you all!

Our expressways' perimeters are festooned with monstrous hoardings advertising everything from banks to beer, messages from God and our lady President (who frequently confuses herself with same) and potato chips to adult diapers.
During our frequent typhoons in the monsoon season the inevitable happens, often with interesting results.
I have a little surface rust on my new/old car and was planning on sanding it down and sticking abit of hammerite on it but thought i better ask the wisdom of fellow users of the honest one Read more
and then you can drink the dishwater afterwards!

You ever considered turning to crime Pu? You'd probably spend less time banged up in the cells and wouldn't keep getting called out in the small hours :)
