I have a little surface rust on my new/old car and was planning on sanding it down and sticking abit of hammerite on it but thought i better ask the wisdom of fellow users of the honest one

There are a number of really good 'rust converter' products around which you simply paint onto rusty areas having removed any loose rust first. IIRC they react with the iron oxide to form a surface which can then be painted and shouldn't rust any further. I've used one sourced from Screwfix to very good effect several times in the last year or two.

Just been looking for it AM - it's called (would you believe?) "Rust Convertor" and only costs £4.99 for 250mls. It's item #18770 on page 110 of the last catalogue I can find (cat. 76) and the Screwfix no. is 0500 414141. HTH.

Nice to know my kidneys will never rust away, what ever else gets me.

Coke (or Pepsi etc) also contain the main anti-rust ingredient phosphoric acid.

Coke & Pepsi are also excellent for returning stained cutlery to new appearance - used extensively in catering trades for this purpose.
