Do any Broomers know where I can hire a Lotus Elise for a day?
I had my heart set on a track day as an Xmas present, but this seems a little expensive.
My best price is currently about £130, but this is in London. I'm based in Bristol and obviously, the closer the better!
Many thanks. Read more

"Man gets stolen car back - in better condition
20 December 2002
A Londoner whose old banger was stolen got it back - in better condition than before it was taken.
The Sun reports that the F-reg Nissan Sunny, which belonged to 25-year old Jonny Newman from West Hampstead, had a broken temperature gauge, fuel gauge and stereo when it was stolen, and it also overheated whenever it went over 40 mph. But four weeks after it was taken, police spotted it on the road and arrested the driver, returning the car to Jonny - who found that not only had its problems been sorted out, it had even had its engine tuned for a bit more go.
The police told Jonny that the car may have been prepared for use as a getaway car. Jonny said: "I was expecting it to be a real wreck, but it was better than ever... whoever took the Sunny obviously liked their cars and had treated the old girl well. I've done very well out of the whole incident."
That's one happy ending for a stolen car story, and here's another - a violent London gang responsible for stealing £350,000-worth of cars were jailed yesterday for a total of 80 years.
The seven youths, aged 17-20, stole 19 BMWs, Mercedes, Audis and Subarus, forcing their owners to hand over keys and carrying out 'car-jack' attacks, using guns and knifes and, in some cases, forcing their way into victims' homes to get their car keys.
The Snaresbrook court heard that the gang had modelled themselves on gangsters from violent films, and had imitated scenes of car-jackings they had seen on screen. They were also found guilty of robbing two betting shops, a building society, a post office and a supermarket."

Now that we have had a couple of threads on ugly cars, lets be more positive and discuss the many beautiful cars around. I'll start off with a classic, the Lagonda which was featured on the front of the Telegraph Motoring supplement on Saturday. What a beautiful car!
Oh, and of course Volvo V70s are beautiful also.
Cheers

It has to be the Citroen DS (Goddess) but the Traction Avant always appealed to me too.
If the moderns - nothing at all really.
Hi,
I wondered has anyone come across this problem with their diesel Metro, AX, Saxo, etc. Occasionally when turning on the ignition the glowplug light doesn't extinguish until the car is started (as if a temperature sensor isn't working) and then when the engine is running you can hear the relay cutting in & out, at idle this causes the engine speed to change (I assume due to electrical load). As far as I can tell the problem seems related to the water temperature sensor (green one on the front right of the cyl. head), I've tried 'tightening' the connections on this but it hasn't made any difference, I suppose it could be either a faulty sensor or a broken wire. What I really need is a good description of how the cold start system works, I've read what I can find in the Saxo owners manual but it's still a bit short on detail.
Merry Christmas and thanks! Read more
Steve, thanks for telling us the outcome. It would be nice if everyone did likewise.
So it was what you suspected in the first place. Good thinking, Tonto!
Hi there, can anybody suggest a reasonably priced DIY kit to adapt wind down windows to electric?
Cheers Read more
I'm sure I've seen DIY kits at Lucas Stockists.
I should imagine some other auto electric factors could sort you out.
I Think Cliff's advice is probably best. If you can find the same model with a higher spec in a scrap yard, just nick them from it. Also any subsequent replacements will be more straight forward as well.
Whilst you're at it why not pinch the central locking system from the same car if yours hasn't got that as well.
All the best.

I've just bought a 1996 Audi A4 TDI (reading 69,000miles)which pulls like a train and drives really nicely but once it's warmed up the idle becomes rough. It's as if a pot keeps missing though it never stalls. I've changed all the filters and tried injector cleaner but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. On the tacho the tickover speed reads about 840rpm - is that a bit slow? If I could speed up the idle maybe it would smooth out. Any ideas welcome.

If you are cleaning the mass airflow sensor, be careful! They are very fragile. I damaged the maf from my Vectra td when I carefully cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol. It might be worth submerging it, but I wouldn't touch the metal sensors even with a soft brush etc. The replacement cost me £160, be warned!
Thanks to everyone for the insurance advice from my previous post - but I'm afraid I'm back for some more advice!!
I've settled on buying a Mondeo estate - ideally petrol 2.0 Zetec trim, and I have a top budget of £10k, and can pay cash immediately.
Now I've seen the ads for the Great Trade Centre, and will nip down on Tuesday to suss it out, but to be honest, having read other posts / forums etc, I'm unlikely to buy from there as I don't know my mechanical ar$e from elbow, and don't really trust that I'll not walk out with a lemon (might not work out that way on the day though!)
My other option is a local Ford main dealer, who have a May 2001 (Y) Mondeo 2.0 Zetec estate, 16,00 miles, and through the Ford Direct scheme, on the forecourt for £10,500. I've done the test drive - it's very clean inside, FSH (actually an ex-Ford demonstrator), and has no external marks or evidence of maltreatment. It doesn't even smell of cigs inside either!
OK - now down to the list of questions:
1) How much headroom do you think there is on the Ford Direct car... ideally I'd try to get it for around £9,500 - is this likely to happen, taking into account the "end of month" and "end of calendar year" scenario?
2) Any further tips for shopping at TGTC?
3) Is Santa likely to bring me one instead?
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Cheers,
Chris

Getting the last owner's details from the V5 is one thing - passing on a third party's details using data you hold legitimately for a different purpose is a big problem now so far as I understand it.
Long live the Data Protection Act !
An Xmas quiz:
We all at sometime have to be a passenger in a car driven by someone whose driving makes you feel decidedly unsafe. What do you do if the driver is:
a. your boss.
b. your partner
c. your parent
d. your child
e. your best friend

If you are a passenger in the car where the driver's driving is truly terrifying, a tactful way to get them to slow down is to tell them that you are getting carsick. Nothing like the threat of a puddle of diced carrots in their pride and joy to make them take notice.
Unluckily for me, it is actually true. Heavy footed driving can turn me green within minutes!

Shortly after passing my test, roundabout near Andover, Triumph Herald 13/60 on crossply tyres. Misjudged my approach speed, lifted off the throttle, the back end snapped out of line just to prove that all the old stories about Herald handling were true, and I ended up facing the wrong way. Luckily no other cars about, and the lessons I learned have stayed with me ever since.

I've been an idiot today. I won't bore you with the details but my crappy driving ended with me going over a kerb at about 40mph, I was lucky it only cost me my tyre, I feared alloy wheel plus suspension damage as well! Take care in the wet!
Im a loser baby....so why don't you kill me?! Read more
I did exactly the same thing yesterday during a typically BMW driver diconnected brain moment. I kerbed SWMBO's MINI (are they wide or what ?) at single figure mph, no damage only verbal abuse from SWMBO and a dirty look from the other driver that I failed to give way on a hill,. Guilty pleas all round - never do it again.
Maz, I forgot to mention - the result of either of these could be an expensive love affair. Be warned!
