Ah but did you have to swerve to avoid insects and wind-blown sweet-wrappers for fear of denting the bodywork? ;)

My corolla is getting too expensive to keep. Group 10 insurance (I'm 19), tax for a 2.0, expensive parts and servicing mean I am going to have to get something smaller and newer for about £2500-3000.

I need something cheap to run, low insurance and is reliable etc.
I've seen a decent '99 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec and also Corsa's and Polo's, I'm not sure if they are going to be trouble or not.

Has anyone got any suggestions or had any experience of those cars?

Thanks

Go with the Fiesta, decent build on the later models, nice design, fantastic handling, and the 1.25 is reasonably quick around the town. OK, OK, I may be biased, I just happen to like it a lot. :)

Surely the 2.0/2.3 Ford DOHC has chain not belt.

If thats so then that is probably why I can find no mention of it in the service schedule.

Hello all, hope Christmas went by safely and snugly. I'm just back from a little jaunt to extended family in York and driving home tonight in the beemer, I was going around a large roundabout in third at low to moderate speed when my back end went out unexpectedly. No harm done, and I got it under control again straight away, but was a little shocked as I didn't think the slight wetness on the road would have been enough to provoke this at such low speed. As I've mentioned before, this is my first RWD car and I was able to drive on ice the other week with no mishap - I just didn't think that this level of caution would be required in all but the driest of conditions!
Anyway, it made me think that the rear tyres, while still legal, are more worn than the front ones and I should probably replace them to try and guard against a repeat performance. Can't really afford a full set, so it'll just be a pair, and there's a lot of life left in the front tyres in any case. I know there's a variety of opinion out there about whether better-gripping tyres should be fitted to front or rear wheels. I would normally fit a pair of new tyres to the front wheels for better traction and straight-line stopping, but this being RWD I am inclined to put new ones on the back. Does anyone with experience of RWD cars agree/disagree with my thinking? Read more

Andy, If you go to www.driveradviser.com/ which is Dunlops web site
and find FAQ they say you should fit them on the
rear irrespective of front or rear wheel drive.
They say that this is also the advice of BRA (British
Rubber Association).
Lots of advice on tyres here.

Hello
I agreed with what you [and others]said.
I wonder why I had to have an argument with a Mazda dealer who, without consulting me, took the newly-tyred wheels off the back and put them on the front at servicing, telling me I was wrong when I protested. Thanks for agreeing. Could it be to do with putting down a not-very-young woman?

Has anyone had a Mondeo with rust on it?
I have had a couple of rusty Fords before and am a bit weary of buying another.
I am looking for a earlyish turbo diesel one, are there any particular points to look out for on the test drive/inspection?
Thanks. Read more

My TD estate is 3.5 years old and shows no sign of rust. It's done 115000 miles and it's history is routine servicing, an aircon pump under warranty and an alternator at 112000. It uses no oil; I change the oil & filter at 5K intervals and it doesn't need topping up when I check it between times.
Drive sensibly and you should get at least 43/44 mpg (some do better than this).
Run it on decent diesel as HJ recommends and this will improve the fuel usage (I use Shell).
It's a great all round car, practical, spacious and cost effective if that's what you want; note that it's no sprinter though and noisy if you wind it up.

Can anyone offer some advice. One of our cars is a Kia Sportage which is fitted with an aftermarket Cat2 immobiliser (CEL Protector 10) which was on the car when we got it. Today we have problems starting the vehicle. I can seemingly de-activate the immobiliser and the LED changes from red to green. Try to start, all warning lights come on with ignition, turn to start position and nothing. Battery is good. Once the car starts all is well. Is this likely to be an immobiliser problem or something wrong with the car? Any suggestions where to look will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Servelan. Read more

Looks like it a fault with the starter motor after all.

In the vein of Pugugly's my first crash thread might I start a humourous thread about light hearted encounters with old bill?

No rants purr-lease! If it is reduced by the usual (or other) culprits then I request the moderator to zap the entire thread please.

Aged about 12, yes really.

Driving Dad's A40 Somerset on a disused airfield we got a pull from a yellow air sea rescue helicopter helped by a plod biker.

Apparently the airfield (Carnaby) was an emergency landing site.

First and only - so far! The summer of 1967. Me and a friend in my 1961 100E Ford Pop hammering down the A1 from a holiday in the lake district. I overtake a string of wagons (this was when derestricted MEANT derestricted!) and OB shoots past me and gongs me in.

All documentation in order, so just a warning. "Nurse it home sir, your big ends sound like they're about to break out through the side of your block".

"Sorry Officer, I thought it was just tappets".

"Afraid not sir. Drive carefully and it should get you home".

I did and it did. Factory recon engine fitted by (a different) friend cost seventy quid (trade price but that's another story) and a few beers though. Actually held in stock by a local Ford dealer.

Two weeks later a neighbour DID put his big ends through the block on his 100E, so I'll always be grateful to that policeman. And not only for calling a spotty 17 (well, nearly 18) year-old "sir"!

Ah! The golden age of motoring!

Suspension is locked in the sport mode meaning a hard ride.
Dealer has confirmed no output from the Hydractive suspension ECU (H3 Version) to the front and rear electrovalves in the automatic mode.
Would appreciate any help with regard to Citroen electrical wiring diagrams and trouble-shooting advice, especially pin-out details to the black and white 15-way plugs connected to the suspension ECU.
Many thanks in anticiapition. Read more

Hi Will
If you have not already done so, go to www.groups.yahoo.com, search for the XM-L group, register and join in. You will get the info you need from other XM owners who are there.

My 1.6 205 GTI started making a loud humming noise accompanied by some vibration through the floor and pedal but only when decelerating (foot off the throttle) and the engine bay was hot. It is now doing it all the time (except when accelerating) and is now making squeaking noises when turning. It does not matter whether the clutch is engaged or not. I have heard that engine mounts are a common problem with these engines. I'd be grateful if anyone has any knowledge of this problem.

cheers

The final collision was sideways, rolling into the ditch, not frontal so the front airbags shouldn't have activated.
