Hi,

I have put down a deposit on this Hyundai i10 (RF16YZM) with 34,303 miles on the clock. MOT history shows no fails and two minor advisories from years ago - other than that it's a clean sheet. However, from 2021 the car has no proof of servicing (lines up with when new owner, an older lady, took on the car). That means it has gone 3.5 years or 20,000 miles without proof of servicing.

Have had a test drive and there's no weird sounds, feels good to drive, and is immaculately kept apart from the wheel caps that the seller is going to replace.

Have tried contacting Hyundai to try and find missing history but could not progress due to GDPR.

Was feeling anxious about the lack of service history so got my mechanic cousin to have a look and he believes it's a great wee car, but noticed thinning brake pads that the seller has agreed to replace. My cousin also said that if I am worried about the service history I can give it an engine flush after 5k miles for peace of mine?

Despite all this I'm still very anxious about the gap in service history. I am naturally a very cautious person so I am looking for someone to tell me whether I am overreacting and should buy the car or if I am right to consider moving on.

I will appreciate any thoughts on this Read more

I’d buy it . Sounds like a great little car . Certainly get oil and filter done . I wouldn’t bother with an engine flush . Waste of time .

Thank you for your advice, would you recommend getting the oil and filter done straight away despite the garage having receipts for them doing it for sale, or should I wait a few thousand miles then do it?

Absolutely no point changing the oil twice - assuming it has been done properly, of course. Only a very shady garage would charge for an oil change they hadn't done, as that would be fairly easy to check ! Make sure there is a new filter though, if you or your mates can....

My daughter has a 2014 Ford KA and recently had a new clutch fitted locally, they then called and said it was struggling to get into 2nd gear. They said a new gear cable was needed. It was there for a few days and they said they were struggling to do it. My daughter then picked the car up and they weren't charged for that- so mustnt have been done and wasn't charged.

Going to take elsewhere now but wonder if you agree it is likely gear cable?... Read more

In last day a noticeable whining sound has just appeared when stationary, revving the engine and when driving. The car is driving apart from the noise.

Any ideas guys ? Read more

Could be anything rotating at the front end . Belt needs to be removed to check components being driven by the polyvee belt .

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about corroded subframes and corroded fuel pipe, would it be an expensive job? Hyundai Amica 2008... Read more

The description 'corroded' is very vague. Surface corrosion on something solid like a subframe could be little more than cosmetic. On part of the pressed-metal bodywork it could be bad news. A rusty fuel pipe could be cheaply replaced. It all depends.

Hi my son has a Citroen c1 2011, it has a high bite point and my husband put it in 4th gear the other day. ( It was parked on drive) And took his foot off the clutch and the car didn't stall. Hubby said he thinks clutch is on its way. Any thoughts appreciated ??

Thanks Julie Read more

Clutches are weak on these, but they’re cheap to do and any garage can do it. As already said it’s circa £90/£100 for a clutch plus Labour to fit it. Not the end of the world.

I am in need of a new car & looking at the Ford Kuga 20 reg upwards. My last few cars have been diseal but after a discussion with a salesman at Ford he suggested a petrol car as diseal is being phased out and in 10 years time when I come to change cars this could have a effect on part exchanging or getting any value.

I don't drive many miles, I work within 3 miles of home and family & friends live within 20 mins drive. Once a year we drive to Cornwall pulling a trailer with camping stuff approx 300 miles each way. My partner is admiant we need a diseal for this purpose as a petrol would not pull a trailer. I know nothing about cars so any advice would be appreciated.... Read more

A 1.5 petrol Kuga will tow 750kg unbraked or 1,730kg braked trailer.

I have a trailer tent of around 400kg and have towed it with three petrol cars, including a 1.2. .I have not had any problems.

Hi there

Hello - I’m new here and had a question if anyone has got thoughts.

We are in the market for a used EV and it’s down to the iX3 or Mercedes EQC. Generally we prefer the iX3, but it’s rear wheel drive not 4 wheel and we live on a hill, so a bit concerned about traction when it gets to icy winter conditions. Does anyone have experience with this model and could comment?

Thanks very much for any help.

I don't think the 4wd on the Merc would make much difference. It's not a 'proper' 4wd with diff locks and low ratio gears so is probably more of a performance and handling thing. I think it makes sense to have it on an EV to get the power down better, but it's not going to turn it into an off roader.

I suppose one issue quite specific to EVs is that they often come with 'special' tyres that are supposed to improve efficiency and reduce wear. What this really means is that have a harder compound and lower rolling resistance. Combine that with the extra weight of the batteries and the very accessible torque and I think you'll have a vehicle that is very hard to drive in snow and ice....
