Weekend UK visits and driving - Joao Rocha

Hello,

Im an Irish resident who travels every weekend to the UK.

I have done this for the past year and up until now, I have been renting cars as far as transportation goes.

Now, since we are in high season again, rental prices have gone up and I was looking for alternatives.

Theoretically, I can use my Irish reg car and bring it over to the UK and use it up to 6 months every year. Zurich specifically says there's no limit on the duration and frequency of the visits.

I could swap the car every 6 months, it needs NCT (MOT equivalent) anyway and I also need a car in Ireland so I could swap cars every 6 months.

I'd much rather have a UK reg car with UK insurance but no company wants to quote me.

If anyone has been in similar situation could you provide advice?

Rentals would cost me 7.2K GBPs/year atm, so I dont mind paying extra premium for the insurance.

Thanks for the help!

A UK Registered car would need a Registered Keeper with a valid UK address. Who would that be?

Additionally, have you passed a UK Driving Test?

Do you not have a relation here who can register a car for you tax and mot it and have you as an extra driver, as long as they use it when you are not here.

If you are an irish citizen the following may apply.

The "Common Travel Area" (CTA) allows British and Irish citizens to move freely, live, work, and study in either jurisdiction without needing visas or residence permits, and to access social benefits, healthcare, and social housing support,

I do, thats an option for me yes.

Im a resident not a citizen. Even if I had British citizenship, if im not a resident, I cannot get insurance on a UK reg car.

I have someone who'd be willing to be a keeper with a driving license and some uk insurance history.

Would I then be able to be a named driver and have legal insurance even if Im not a resident?

No, i have a a full eu license, i can swap it for an irish one, but that's it.

I'm a British citizen living permanently in Austria. I exchanged my UL licence for an Austrian licence around 12 years ago. When I visit the UK, I use my father's car. LV were quite happy to add me as a temporary driver despite not having a UK licence and not being a UK resident, although adding me as a second driver for the duration of the policy was a no-no. However, when he was insured with Saga, they refused to insure me at all. It's obviously very much dependent on the company, so you might have to do some homework.

The last few times I have used Tempcover to insure his car, because they offer temporary UK insurance to expats, although one of the conditions is that you must have previously lived in the UK. They aren't cheap, I have just paid £221 for 11 days cover (£87 of which is the Tempcover arrangement fee), the car is a Peugeot Partner Teepee 90bhp for which he's just paid £150 for his annual insurance! Still cheaper than hiring a car. I hope some of this might be of help.

We have family who come from Canada, Iraq. and the EU. Never had a problem adding anyone on temp cover on our policies for the past 15 years.
