I'm finding condensation on the inside of the front windscreen in my Golf Mk4 lately. Nothing obviously wrong, could just be autumn I guess - are they prone to faults that can cause this? Is it an early warning of anything, eg heater radiator?
Had a new w/screen in July, but haven't seen any leaks or anything. Read more
Hi every-one, yes its me again. I have a 1999 v reg daewoo matiz which has covered 50,000 miles. I bought it at 48.000 miles. When should I have the belt replaced on it, and does any-one know what the cost is likely to be. Any advice appreciated. thanks, Graham. Read more
Thank-you every body for the information, Graham.
How much adhesion should paint on a bumper have? I have noticed a blister on the front bumper of our C5 today and, whilst it has collected numerous small chips and scratches over the years, that have gone down to the plastic, it has only ever flaked off once before, which was when I first bought it. It will definitely require a repaint to avoid an unsightly patch of black plastic. The car is now five years old. Is this kind of thing inevitable with paint on plastic? Would it be best to get the whole of the bumper done?
Also, there doesn't seem to be any primer coat underneath the top coat. Is this normal nowadays? Read more
Quite true... one of many reasons why I choose not to run a these days car. I'm currently changing both our vehicles to last the 2007-2013 period and it is getting harder to meet all our needs... inc black bumper contact points!

Wonder if anyone can help - normally my home site is set to the BBC, however as of today it keeps referring to www.hudeem.com - which has questionable content. No matter what I do I cannot get the BBC site without my browser referring me to this website. This only started today, and was coupled with my inability to download e-mails. Ran virus scan - nothing , ran spyware (Counterspy) and it found a trojan. Deleted this, went to a previous restore point before this became a problem - still does it. I have changed the home page to anything else but the BBC and it's OK but the minute I type BBC into the browser it takes me to this hudeem website. E-mail now working though.
I have checked in internet options and in couterspy and both of them are saying that BBC is my home page but it isn't.
I would be really grateful if anyone has any thoughts on how to cure this.
Thanks in anticipation.
Should have said I am running MS IE as my browser, Norton 2004 as anti virus and Sun belt Counterspy as spyware. Read more
Thanks all. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the new layout.
I will persevere with it for a couple of days, and if I still can't stomach it, I'll be reverting back to IE6.
Golf Mk4 Cooant warning message appeared this morning but coolant level perfectly OK. The sensor appears to be two stainless rods immersed it the coolant header tank. Does this just measure that there is or is not coolant or is it really smart and measures the resistance across the pins to establish the presence of the correct proportion of anti freeze. The message has not returned and all is well. Regards Peter Read more
A little off topic but.
Take care with coolant where G12 is invloved. It is worth paying the extra for genuine VW stuff....
Son called today saying the clutch is 'sticking' on his 106. The clutch disengages and doesn't slip, but the pedal moves normally till the last inch or so of travel, at which point there is a definite sticking and it then goes the rest of the way down.
Checking under the bonnet, the cable seems free, there is a squeak which seems to be from the release lever or inside the housing.
Given the age of the car and its marginal emissions pass at last month's MOT (unlikely to pass next time) I would appreciate opinions whether he should get it fixed or replace it ?
(It is a 1996 petrol 1.1 which has about 60k on the clock)

I would agree with the other posts and say it would be an idea to keep the vehicle.
My peug 106 1.1 95 model has done 120k and engine still seems in good condition - only uses a pt of oil every 2000 miles- and still gets 48-52 miles to the gallon.
The guy that did the last mot said it was very good condition and i have been told from people in the trade that peug's generally dont have any serious problesm with rust and i still see a few on the road that are older than mine and look in good condition.
I did have to the head gasket done at 55k but its been ok since then.
After contributing answers to a few questions I now feel qualified to submit a question! Has anybody had experience of, and more importantly, found a solution for the following problem I have with my 1996 Audi A4 2.6 SE auto (ABC engine).
The problem is as follows. The idle speed is not being controlled properly, but it is an intermittent fault. Sometimes (about 25% of the time) when driving and returning to idle the engine speed dips right down and then bounces back to normal again. Occasionally the car will stall completely, usually in the most dangerous and embarassing situation. With the car in neutral, if the accelerator is blipped slightly, the rev counter will rise, fall back and almost stall, bounce back by itself, and then fall back again and cut out completely. On separate occasions, say once every few weeks, the idle speed will lock too high, bouncing around between approx 1200 and 1500 rpm. The only solution is to turn the engine off for a short while and restart.
This problem has existed since I got the car 2 years ago. It had done 53k miles, it has now done 109k miles. My previous identical A4 2.6 SE auto had exactly the same problem most of the time- from around 80k miles when I got it up to 270k miles when I sold it.
I have tried the following to fix it over the years:
Put on computer at local specialist- no fault codes.
Replaced the idle control valve stepper motor thingy on the inlet manifold
Removed & cleaned the throttle body assembly many times with carb cleaner spray. This seems to give a temporary cure for a few 1000 miles.
Many full services- inc. air filter, plugs etc.
Fuel system / injector cleaner additive in the fuel tank a couple of times.
So- is this an inherent design issue, maybe explaining why the 2.6 engine was dropped in 1998, or is there something I have missed? Thank you in anticipation, Chris A. Read more
Thanks Micky. Don't know if it has dashboard diagnostics but it has been on the diagnositic computer at my local independant but no faults shown. I have cleaned the IACV many times (and the TB)- and as you say it seems to clear the problem for a while and then it returns. So there must be an underlying problem. The whole assembly is coated in oil inside when I pull it apart but the car does not burn any significant amounts of oil between services- i.e. it never needs topping up. The ventilation / breather pipes from the cam covers to the air intake are clear but have a coating of 'mayonaise' inside them. So I think I will try cleaning the TB & IACV again but this time leave the breather pipes disconnected- with the holes at the air intake blocked off (but not the pipes) and see how it goes.

The drivers side front door wont latch without a hearty slam. When this first happened I aimlessly fiddled with the catch at the edge of the door to see what was wrong and accidently locked it while the door was open. I tried to unlock the door using the key but nothing happened. So went round to the passenger door to see if I could work out what had gone wrong and fiddling with a screwdriver I unbelievably locked that door as well which again would not unlock using the key; I was left with both doors that would not close. Only by more teasing with a screwdriver and constantly working the handle did the catch move into the correct position. In all my year of motoring I've never incountered this problem, is that normal in locks? Read more
take out the lock and take the plastic cover off. You will see a spring broken bend another hook on with a piece of wire this should sort your problem
Hi every-one out there, hope you all had a great xmas, and you have an even better new year.Well my little daewoo matiz is still driving me crackers !!! I originally thought that is was my heater matrix, and a week or so ago removed the entire carpet from the car to try and see where the water was coming from. And it has remained bone dry for a while. On thursday it rained on and off, and on friday night rained quite hard, i was driving both these nights, and kept an eye on the drivers floor for any water entering the car at all.......BONE DRY !!! When i got home at about 10 pm last night, still bone dry, so i was well pleased........ The morning after about 11 am I opened the drivers door..... and guess what......Yes the floor on my side was covered in a puddle of water about an 16th of an inch deep, all over the drivers side floor. The passenger side was totally dry. I cannot see any water droplets coming from behind the brake pedal area at all. Any-way, this morning i phoned a windscreen place, and booked it in with them to see if they can find where the water is coming in. I am that pis..d off with it at the moment, I am even dreaming about it....... I will let you know what happens next...... Happy new year, to you all.Graham.

Blimey, Hope i have not upset any-one on here !!! Well, i have just got back from the garage, where they placed a thing called a pressure tester on it, and Yes they have located the leak to a split water pipe, which some-one at some time had taped up with insulation tape......some crazy people out there or what..... The smell they say is a mixture of the leaking antifreeze etc, which storme kindly pointed out. When i first bought this car about 3 months ago, it seemed to be losing a bit of water then, so i asked a mechanic to look at it, and he did the same thing with a pressure tester, and said it was fine. i wonder if his tester is faulty ? Any-way, the car is going in the garage later today to be sorted, and while they have it they are going to have a look at the mystery water that keeps coming in the car when it rains...... i am praying that they find it !!! I will post the result as soon as i know. Thanks every-one, Graham.
I have a faulty connection in a block connector that plugs into the ecu, however according to Renault you cant get the block separately so a new wiring loom is needed!! (£400+ just because of a loose connection) I was thinking, could I cut a plug leaving approx 5cm length of wires from a car being broken and join them to the wires on the end of my wiring loom?
So my question is.... is this possible, or do some of these wires have built in resistances where the values may change and upset the ecu? (even if the wires are the same lengths?)
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks Read more

Knowing exactly what engine would help; but I can't think of any reason not to replace the plug - if done precisely in the way detailed. If the plug is sealed, how did this one terminal get damaged beyond repair?
Given the quality of most current Renault looms; the repair will probably be the best bit of it.
1)Likely candidate - Pollen Filter (Pollen Filter housing could have been disturbed during the fitting of the windscreen)
2)Are you loosing coolant - it is not unknown for the heater matrix to start leaking...
