Just about to hand in my car a VW Passat TDI 130 for its 60 k service to a garage recommended on these forums, have had no major niggles, only that the AC isnt as errm cool as it should be , it does work but lowers the temp ever so slightly .

Thing is would I be risking another couple of hundred quid atleast by mentioning it and by them finding that something major seems to be wrong or at best would it be a matter of not too much.

Any experts who could hazard a best case scenario and the worst. If its likely to be too bad(read costly) I wont mention it otherwise could possibly get away with not too much can tell them.
Considering that the warm months are few anyway on the other hand could well leave it!

Any advise welcome

Thanks

You would only be putting this dye in if you suspect there's a leak anyway. So once the leak is fixed you would need to re-gas anyway.

I was interested in what HJ said about Northamptonshire, in this report. Those of us who live here suffer from all the problems he commented on. There are also many speed humps, in various states of repair. My Mondeo's rear suspension was damaged by this, but not discovered until it was too late.
I have just sent a copy of the relevant comments to the County Council, adding that I live and drive to work here, and suffer from these conditions daily. My son-in-law got lost recently, although he lives in the county, because the A43 vanished somewhere on the southern bypass of the town.
I wonder if they will reply to me, a council tax payer. I will report if I get a reply. Read more

In defence of the A43 TVM writes:

From Kettering to Corby there is only two speed cameras (both in the small town of Geddington). From Corby onto Duddington, it is a cracking road to drive. Great road surface, with some really gorgeous open visibility bends at the Duddington end. There is one there that looks harmless but has a sudden tightening effect that makes your botty twitch.

This is a bit of a general legal question, but I'll give it a car slant to justify it.

I seem to recall from my law lectures way back at University, that if a car were to crash into my garden I can claim it as my possession and thus make the removal of it, by the owner, an offence. Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

I've trawled the internet but cannot find any reference to it, but I think it's either trespass or nuisance.
If true, then I presume it dates from livestock wandering across boundaries. Read more

you might be able to sieze the car or jumbo in leu of or until compensation is paid, but you will then also be responsible for its care to ensure its condition does not deteriorate.

Can anyone tell me where I'd be able to get insurance cover for a short term period - possibly 20 days. My annual policy ends at the end of this month, but I'm getting a company car starting from mid-August, so won't need my car anymore. I don't want to be charged astronomical charges for cancelling my annual policy after a couple of weeks - is there anywhere that offers short period cover? Read more

Try www.insuredaily.co.uk. They do cover for vans as well. Funky site and you can print your cover note after you pay by credit card.

Sat waiting for Mrs. S6 1SW in our local town centre car park (Council owned, but attached to a Co-op) and being bored, started reading the rules and regulations notice board... was surprised to see that vehicles over '1580kg' were prohibited. The quoted weight for my own car is 1400+kg, so I'm guessing that many of today's larger cars (E-class Merc or above) would fall foul of this rule. My guess is that the bye-law comes from years ago when cars were a lot less substantial than today. Would have thought any observant traffic warden could have a field day?

I would think not too many, same goes for the traffic
wardens too.

Must admit, I don't know how much traffic wardens weigh either.

Local news reports a disgruntled man destroying a house with a hired digger.....as the camera pans round there is an 06 reg 300C half buried in the rubble.

I just thought I'd share this with Murphy the Cat - I don't know if there's any collective mourning that needs to happen.....if it's any consolation I thought it was a Bentley at first.

I was emailed the following pictures sometime last week with the subject header "Bundoora Holden"

This is what's left of a new VY HSV Clubsport at the Watson Holden in Bundoora dealers after a 19 year old test drove it. He was driving it back and was going WAY too fast around the corner, up the gutter, travelled the 10 metres to the gates, mounted some cars and landed as you see story is cops were chasing him and it is estimated that he hit at 160 km/h

Is it a general rule of thumb - that all finance packages can be paid of in advace of the payment plan.

do all finace packages have a rule where the person taking out the deal can pay it off in advance with a lump sum?

i ask - because there is a deal on a ford focus for £9500 my friend wants, but i enquired for her and the dealer didnt want to know as i asked if i could pay it off in a lump sum a few days/weeks after?
apparently he incures a charge - and any talk of paying of a few days/weeks after doing the deal - makes him lose his commission.

when i worked at hyundai - we rarely did finance so its something new to me. Read more

Peter D - good suggestion, if you can pay off in 6 months, and the dealer will accept the card.

Otherwise there are cards with up to 9 months interest free on balance transfers, although they mostly if not all now charge a fee for balance transfers (usually 2%, but often capped at £50).

hi i'm ashamed to say i know nought about cars. My y reg 2001 renault megane went clunk today while i was driving and my steering went stiff. I was close to home so flipped the bonnet up to see what i now know is the auxiliary drive belt off and two round cogs loose in the compartment. After checking in my haynes manual they appear to both be off the alternater, one fitting inside the other and presumably screwing onto the slightly damaged thread from the alternator. Is this a tension fitting or has it just come loose? The belt looks ok but should i replace it anyway?
Also how easy/costly do you think it might be to fix.

I may be clutching at straws here, but does anyone remember (or even have a copy of the mag, that'd be great!) an article in CAR ealry 1970s referring to the stillborn replacement for the Beetle? It was going to be mid-engined in the sense that the engine was under the rear seat.

I used to have this magazine, but have lost it in various house moves.

On a related tangent, does anyone have and want to sell any old issues of "Car" from the early days to late 80s early 90s? I would be interested in buying.

A friend has asked me to inspect and give an opinion on a BMW Z3 which he is interested in buying privately, and we are going to see it tonight. BMW's mechanicals are outside of my area of expertise, but we know it to be a personal import, and I note HJ's comments in car by car breakdown: "2.8s imported from other markets may have vulnerable Nickasil-lined bores rather than steel-lined bores". My question is, do any of you know how I can tell if this is the case please? Is it engine number, age of manufacture? Obviously if the engine smokes or there are idle problems we will give it a miss! We think the car was built late '99 and UK registered Feb 2000. I would really appreciate further advice on this if you can. I have searched the forum, but no Z3 info. Thanks

My 323 has a clear sticker stating 'BMW Built Dec 98' on the NSF suspension turret, next to the VIN number sticker. The Z3 may have something similar. My understanding having looked at various websites, as someone else has said, that these engines had steel lined blocks from 03/98.
