If I park my car and leave it for any more than a few hours, the rear brakes seem to lock on. As a result when I get in and attempt to move the car it wont budge and takes a great deal of popping it into first & reverse gear and putting my foot down to get it to move again - yes I do release the handbrake first.
Been into the garage and they said they cannot find anything wrong, but it still does it. Its actually worse if the weather is damp.
Any suggestions? Read more
What does "warranted mileage" mean at auction (or elsewhere)? Warranted by who? Is there some kind of comeback if it turns out to have been clocked? How would you ever prove a car had been clocked? Read more
A friend (I use the word in its most generous sense) recently bought a brand new Fiesta diesel. He does quite high mileage (say 30k a year) and was getting opinions on what he should do when the car reached the dreaded 100k miles:
a) Trade it in and get another one (but really more-or-less scrap it with that astronomical mileage), or
b) Replace the engine and keep the car.
He simply wouldn't believe the car could do more than 100k on "one engine". In fact he got rid of his previous car at about 100,001 miles because he got so nervous and expected it to break down in a cloud of smoke every time he drove it.
I think he should go for option 'c': sell it to me for £10 (well it's clearly not worth any more than scrap, 100k miles, goodness me no).

Hello !!
The heater on my Fiesta has broken ! It only blows cold air, all the time. The dial for the temprature can be on the hottest setting and it still blows cold air. The direction and speed still works o.k
Any suggestions to what could be wrong ?? Read more
Just changed the valve and it seems to have cured the problem ok. I must admit i would have been happier putting jubilee clips on the hoses instead of the pull together clips that Ford fit but as the pipes are plastic i didn't, and the original clips seem to be holding the hose tight enough to stay water tight. Thanks boys for all the help.
Can any of you advise me of any good books or websites which can help me with setting up my SU carb in my Mini.
It seems to be running quite rich. There seems to be two adjustment screws on, but I dont know which to turn/which direction to turn them. Got the Haynes manual for the car but it does not say to much about setting the carb so I have come to a stop.
Thanks

Hi
Just after some advice as to how to get at the rear brake light cluster on my 2001 Passat as the brake light bulb has gone. The lift out panel comes away easily enough to view the cluster from behind.
Once this is done I can see that all the bulbs seem to sit on one board which has 2 release clips. However depressing the clips does not allow the bulb board to come free, I can't see anything else holding it in and pulling out one side before the other doesnt help either.
So what have I missed? is there a click and twist trick here how does the bulb board get released, the handbook says take to the dealer but seeing as its only a bulb I dont think that should be necessary, there are no obvious fixings I can see only the 2 clips.
Answers please
as always

Just had same problem as Mark and stumbled across this great site.
VW handbook says 'changing the bulbs involves the removal of certain body panels and should be carried out by vw dealer'
Thanks to all of you I have discovered the body panel is only the access cover to the jack and that turning the indicator bulb to the left is all you need to do.
Bit sneaky of VW not to tell you this in the handbook.
Local dealer did however give me two brake light bulbs for free.
I have a V reg, 1.1 saxo and have a problem with the electrics, the heater circulation fans are working only intermittently and it seems that the rear windscreen de-mister is now doing the same. The de-mister button is only partially illuminated.
I am not sure of what the problem could be, two possible ideas have been
a, Ignition switch, if this is the case allegedly it would need to either be relayed or replaced and then re-programmed.
b, or as the "RAC" put it a bad earth
Has anyone else encoutered a similar problem and does anyone have any indication of the costs that I should expect to incur if either of the above do prove to be the problem.

Hi, i also have a SAXO without PAS and i have the same problem where the heater doesnt work as well as the de mister, and i looked at the internal fuse box on the passeger side and i found there was a small wiring sticking which has come out...i was wondering where it is ment to go and to what connectors... i am not sure what to do
thanks you
Dear forum members,
My wife's 1998 Peugeot 106 has an intermittent problem which seems to baffle most mechanics. The car will start first time, and drive perfectly well. And then, for no apparant reason it refuses to start the next time it is used which is often only a few hours later.
The engine turns over no probs and there is always plenty of fuel. After a number of attempts to start and after a bit of waiting, the car will suddenly spring into life.
I have read that it could be the fuel injection pump. Does anyone have any ideas please?
Thanks

Son had exactly same problem on a 1998 106. Changed the immobiliser coil as described and fixed it immediately.
As it is such a know problem and cheap repair, it would be my first port of call.
Hi all
It is getting difficult to select 1st gear on my Golf Mk2 GTI (137,000 miles).
The symtoms are strange - it is only when the car is on a slant, with a component of the slope running across the car (i.e the slope is going from side to side) that it is hard to get 1st. If the car is level, or on a direct uphill or downhill slope 1st gear is occasionally a little bit stiff, but on certain slopes it is completely impossible to select. It's getting a bit worse with time, although it's just been repaired (crash damage to front wing) and now seems quite a bit worse - I used to have no problems on the slope leading to my garage, but my girlfriend had to drive it in in 2nd last night.
I have checked gearbox oil, seems OK. I don't know how much resistance there should be, but the engine seems to rock quite easily - is there a chance that knackered engine mounts are a cause? It makes sense in terms of the fact the problems only occur when the car is tipped side-to-side. I've heard that the gear selector bushes can go, but I can't see what the slope of the car would have to do with it and hence would expect it to be a problem on the flat.
Has nayone come across this before? All advice gratefully received

Cheers for comments.
Before I go ahead and try it out, can you remember what access is like? I changed the oil in the car and found access to be a bit of a pig with the front splitter and side skirts. It's a big bumper version, but with standard VW parts and it's not lowered, so I was surprised by how difficult it was. I have some axle stands, but suffer from the lack of a flat surface to work on - I can use Homebase car park, but I don't really like messing with the car in areas where I could get stranded if I mess it up.

I'm thinking of doing the cambelt change myself, having seen the likely cost of a garage doing it. I normally do my own servicing, but haven't done a cambelt before and understand it's a bit tricky. The Haynes manual isn't especially clear.
Has anyone on here got any direct experience of having done one, and could they give me any pointers? Also, could anyone clarify the belt change interval on this car for me? Some sources have told me every 60k and some every 80k.
Cheers,
Graham. Read more
Whereabouts are you, DL?
I'm not averse to a little trip if it means a quality job for a decent price. The opportunity to watch it being done so I could learn something would be fantastic...

Done all that has been said but after a few damp days the little monster stuck again :(
Work colleague spoke to a neighbour of his who works at Vauxhall. In addition to your suggestions he thought it could be the handbrake cable at fault. Said it should run smoothly, but on inspection I have noticed that mine seems to stick & is very dry compared to the one on my Mini which appears to be lubricated with something and runs smoothly.
