Volkswagen Up (2012 - 2023)
1.0 High Up
Does what is says on the tin!
Bought the car as my son’s first car at 56000 miles from a private seller sourced via the VW UP Forum which is highly recommended.
Car was immaculate and had been well looked after.
Car is a five door High Up so has a little more power than the basic models but still no Gti (very important with a 17 year old!)
Plus points are very spacious for a car of this type and extremely economical. Very hard to get under 50 mpg and I’ve seen well over 70 mpg when driven very gently. Better looking and better image than the Seat and Skoda equivalent (very important with a 17 year old!)
Negatives. Rattly clutch release bearing on tickover until clutch engaged (common) Hard to select first and reverse when cold (common).
Silly parcel shelf which stays upright unless you remember to push it down. No switch on drivers door for passenger window. Rear drum brakes stick on when wet after being left with handbrake on for any length of time (common).
Reliability has been 100 percent and car now has covered over 70000 miles though I think a new clutch is on the horizon due to the above (upgraded Polo clutch is often fitted by VW under warranty)..
All of the above problems should have been sorted pre production by VW and indicate that it was built to a price but have been resolved on later post facelift models which have a new gearbox amongst other things.
My advice would be to go for a later model if your budget allows to avoid some of the above frustrations.
Remember that it’s foremost a city car but certainly in the case of the 75 bhp and Tsi models is more that capable on the motorway.
Wife liked driving it that much that we’ve traded her BMW convertible in for an Up Gti which is a hoot to drive!
