Overall reliability

Good city car with some limitations, but good safety.

Had my 74bhp 3 door High Up! four years. Bought used with low mileage and uncommon extras such as sunroof, cruise and city AEB. Had a few issues: needed new boot lock recently and rear drum brakes tend to stick if leave handbrake full on for more than a day when wet or had car wash. It is a city car, it is not a small Golf or even a small Polo. Less refined than larger VWs and less suited for long journeys. Some noises such as gear change whoosh just part of lightweight build of the car. It is good looking, economical, decent to sit in even for above average height driver, fast enough for town use and easy to park (although do have rear parking sensors). It is one of the safest city cars from its time. NCAP rated as 5* in 2011. The downgrade to 3* in 2019 was not a fair result and should not put off anyone. Lost stars due to VW not offering AEB as an option by then (very few people paid for the option and other city cars of the time did not have either) and NCAP testing the e-UP! that was almost 300 kg heavier than the 855kg petrol car in the same bodyshell. Basic physics says cannot apply this result to the petrol models.
