Volkswagen Up (2012 - 2023)
1.0 60ps Take Up 3dr
Spacious and reliable but too slow and uncomfortable
In the 10,000 miles I've done in my Up, it's been useful, reliable and moderately economical. I use it as a van for work; it's a good, practical shape and has a flat floor with the rear seat down (as long as you have the optional adjustable-height floor), It's easy to drive, great in the tight streets where I live, and easy to park. There is plenty of leg room in the front and it's even possible for four adults to sit fairly comfortably for short journeys. Dealer servicing is expensive but DIT parts prices are reasonable. Tyres make an enormous difference to economy -- putting the present (excellent) Michelin Cross Climate tyres on it cut the mpg from 63 to 56. I find the seat to be typical VAG: uncomfortable and lacking lumbar support. As others have said, the clutch 'normally' rattles and the gearbox whines like an old Mini's. This adds to the general noise but noise is to be expected from an economy car. The choppy ride is also to be expected with a short wheelbase like the Up's. The main downside for me is how slow the car is -- any hill, even on a motorway, will likely need at least one change down. (Mine is the 60hp model.) It doesn't have aircon but I'm told that the ones that do are even slower. Oh, and the radio is the worst factory-fit one I've ever come across! Despite everything, I'd still recommend it as a first car, very light van or for anyone who needs spacious, economical transport for two.
