Guaranteed to work until just after the car leaves the pitch!

Is there an easy way of calibrating tyre pressure gauges?

When my Focus went in for a service at a Ford Dealer all my tyre pressures were upped by 4 psi during the service (I checked them before and after). Do they calibrate their gauges? If so then I can calibrate mine against theirs.

I somehow doubt they do. They should.... Maybe I should ask!

Is it possible to buy a gauge which is certified as calibrated? I bought one from Snap On, but there was piece of paper so say that the calibration was checked.

Or if it's a metric gauge, 1 litre of water = 1 kilogram

I would welcome some assistance to help solve the brake light problem on my honda. The dashboard is fitted with a safety indicator which informs the driver if a door is not closed properly or a brakelight bulb has burned out etc. Each side at the rear has a brakelight sensor unit fitted in series with the brakelight circuit. Safety indicator lights up at regular intervals to warn me of bulb failure but if the offending bulb is tapped it lights up.(I know this as I have wedged something against the brake pedal to hold it down. I am sure the trouble is NOT loose bulb connectors, as different bulbs are affected.Besides, the tail lights aren't affected,(sharing the same bulbs)and have cleaned up all the connections. The springs pushing the terminals against the bulbs are all in good condition. The bulb will then stay on again after it has been tapped but the safety indicator with it's accompanying dashboard warning light comes on a bit later and stays on but the bulb doesn't seem to be blown. Could it be a poor earth? The safety unit must be detecting a change in resistance somewhere. I am an experienced multimeter user but don't understand the Honda Manual testing procedure. Andrew,I think you may well be right. I used brasso to clean the socket contacts and emery,brasso,WD40 for the bayonets. All the rain we've had flooded the rear lights. Took ages to clean everything. Bayonets slightly ovalised. There is one slightly dodgy light (double lights each side) but the above has improved things no end.I think we've cracked it.The contacts were indeed oxidised. Now the warning light keeps off. There's one socket that needs a bit more attention. Stanley is a good guy! He makes good lights.(Stanley in case you don't know it,is theJap manufacturer of light units) It is surprising how hot a 21watt bulb gets. I mean deadly hot. Many thanks for your help. Cheers, Mike.

Is there anyone visiting this site who works for NTL?

Can you confirm that come Monday you r switching on a data communication system down our motorways to connect a load of speed (Specs type) cameras with one camera between each junction. And if its not Monday when?

This is not a hoax, its a serious question. Read more

The M20 seems to have dot matrix signs at regular intervals but they never seem to use them. OK,just before Dover they might warn of delays etc. Mind you I don't use the motorway on a daily basis, but still quite regularly. Pray, why is this? Just cant be bothered to transmit messages I suppose. What a waste of money. They could be used to great effect ie. Fog warnings instead of the little signs in the middle of the motorways which most people think don't apply to them. Three weeks ago the overhead signs said "Watch your speed".

Do you have any idea what petrol consumption I am likely to achieve in general mixed driving (rural town and country) from the Picasso with either 1.6 or 1.8 engines and a relatively light load (two people + boot full of luggage)?

No-one seems to have any idea and I can't find any useful data because presumably the marque is too new.

Thanks,

Official EU combined figures are 37.7 for the 1.6, 36.7 for the 1.8 and 51.4 for the HDI 90. I actually got 51+ over something like 1,300 miles in the HDI, but I reckon that the figure for the 1.6 will be worse than suggested because it's underpowered, especially with a load on. No doubt this will start yet another Citroen thread.

Mucking out in fishnets. Now there's a thought.

BTW - back to Citroens - dare I say this? - all our 3 are behaving themselves at last (except my vibrating rear view mirror - make something of that boys).

Thanks for your responses. GEM got my vote at £60 for self and wife driving any car owned by us. Full marks for exremely helpful staff. Different system to AA/RAC, pay the recovery driver and claim back, so don't leave home without credit card. Was a bit worried until I read testimonials saying settlement within 3 days or by return etc. If we need to use it, I'll let you know what happens. The anti-Citroen lobby would say quite likely as there are 3 in the household.
Direct line web site hung on me 5 times, even using the ISDN line at work, saying "this is a very secure site". It was so b****y secure, I couldn't get in.

Well, obviously there are a few (!) but the one that I'm interested in is that If anything strikes sharply the windscreen of a car when a French person is driving, they immediately press on the inside of the windscreen with their thumb or finger for a couple of seconds (this is when there is no visible damage by the way). I've been told that this is to keep the windscreen intact, but can it possibly serve any purpose? Do any other nationalities do this?

Incidentally, I lived in France for a while and the vast majority of drivers did this, young and old (and front seat passengers), so it's not based on the habits of one or two people. I've never seen a Brit do it.

Can anyone enlighten me? Read more
