Volkswagen Polo (2009 - 2017)
VW Polo SEL 1.4 TDi Blue Motion 5 Door
Thermostat & Water Pump Failure Polo SEL 1.4TDi 2015
Car was pre-reg,yet arrived at dealership covered with transit protection ,odo showing 5 miles.
As pre-reg only given 2 year warranty.
Sept this year, temp gauge started exceeding normal 90C (?) but usually reset to normal after a good 25 mile + run. Mileage around 28,000.
Car used for short town trips so hardly ever showed any temp problem.
Car serviced Sept by VW agency ,asked them to check overheating- nothing found.
Coming home one day it started to show high reading, took to my local garage
Checked hoses, one cold so they said new thermo needed.
Was responsible for £250 excess with VW Ext Warr'y,so as garage said it would be less than that figure, would they go ahead, using VW parts.
When they removed old thermo & replaced with new,no coolant was circulating, said that water pump also u/s.
As expense would be over my excess, rang Ext Warr'y & they asked me to drive it to nearest dealership ( 15 miles away) for diagnostics.
Mechanic said that might cause more damage to the engine & I declined saying I'd pay for repairs & contact VW Care in Sheffield, re reimbursement.
While doing the work they replaced cam belt. Bill without this came to around £420.
Contacted VW in Sheffield & they said also that it needed diagnostics. I said that would not show anything as the work had been done & I was looking to recover my costs as the failed parts were INHERENTLY faulty.
They said that they did not agree & it was just a normal running problem.
Took the matter up with CAB & they said to contact VW Financial Services,as it had been bought on HP.
Same response from them- not INHERENT as it had been used for 35 months without problem.
Back to CAB & they said should other owners report any failures to them they would ask Trading Standards to get involved.
Found a VW Polo Forum & at least NINE other owners of this 1.4 TDi engined car had same problem, one having these same parts renewed under warranty for THREE years running.
VW say no problem with this engine,no recalls necessary.
Looks like they are all suffering with the Ostrich Syndrome !
Guess what though ?
They update the Polo this year ,yet no 1.4 TDi engine model !
Make your own minds up folks !
I've had VWs for 50 years but their attitude over this matter means I will not be buying any more.
Great car, loads of extra features as standard (sat nav, park assist, rear cam, cruise control)
Seems like that was the carrot being dangled before us.
All these "extras" are now extra at additional cost- did they do that, originally, for a reason -only VW know ?
PS Have added a photo of the failed water pump.
On the new pump there is a cylindrical metal cowl/sleeve alongside the impeller.
The failed one shows the cowl/sleeve covering the impeller & preventing circulation of coolant.
Why has it failed ?
Answers on a postcard please to VW !!!
