Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
SE BlueMotion Technology 1.6 TDI 5dr Hatchback
Awful
Bought this car brand new on the belief that it would be at least as economical as our 10 year old (MK4) Golf 1.9 Tdi, However the best we can manage is 42 mpg overall.
Our old Golf on the same journeys manages high 60s and is much nicer to drive due to the abundance of Torque it produces below 1900 rpm, Whilst the new offering is rather peaky offering very little below 2500 rpm which makes a huge difference, couple that to woefully over the top gearing (it struggles to propel itself at times) which make's town driving an absolute chore.
Couple that to the idle speed that has a mind of its own hovering up to 1200 rpm then rocks on its engine mounts at 750 rpm, It always feels like you are going to limp home or worse cut out and not restart.
Driving ever so gently only puts the DPF filter light on (incidentally the Stop Start is the biggest cause of this, which asks the question why fit them to their cars?).
Our example also displays flat spots and bunny hops below 2000 rpm all of which is apparently normal ? making a non motorway journey very tiresome.
It has been to three very unsympathetic Dealers who deny there is a problem with this engine and its thirst for fuel. And because it does not display a warning light, They cannot fix it ! VW UK as much use chocolate fire guard, displaying the Apathy remnant of 1970s British Leyland.
And the so called classy interior leaves much to be desired as ours is full of trim rattles, the door trims are very cheaply chat and flimsy around the edges, older VWs used to have little screws holding them in place all along the edges, However the very evident penny pinching means the door trims just float with a couple of screws in place.
We really hate this car and cant wait until the finance is over (3 half years time) We have tried to P/E against the 2.0 TDi model which is vastly superior and should in theory produce decent MPG, however the cost to change did not make economic sense, So we are stuck with this item.
At another Dealer we tried another 1.6 TDi (not Bluemotion) which still only produced low 40 mpg, much to the embarrassment to the Salesman.
Sum Up, If you must have one of these MK6 Golfs Avoid all 1.6 TDi models, 2.0 TDi are best, and looking elsewhere on Tinternet Bluemotion is very Hit And Miss, So buy with Caution as No One will Help You.
