Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
1.4 TSI 160 GT 5dr
Good allrounder
I bought the Golf 2 years ago and it is great drivers car with good high and low speed stability and is particularly good when cornering. The engine is outstanding and you can certainly feel the extra grunt of the supercharger, the only down side is the economy. The Golf has averaged 34 mpg, this is certainly not a great car for urban driving. Build quality is pretty good although not quite up to the same standard as my previous Audi A3(I still don’t think that it justifies the Audi's extra cost). I have had reports of piston damage and loss of compression problems with this engine, fortunately no sign so far. It is actually quite difficult to get hold of Golf with this engine and the dealer reckons that he could sell any he gets hold. In comparison to the Scirocco with the same engine the Golf seems to suffer from much heavier initial deprecation so I think it makes a good used buy (mine was nearly 3 years old and the first owner lost a lot of money). I think the running costs are high but so far the only real problems I have had are with warning lights for tires and indicators coming on. These have always resolved themselves. Definitely cheaper than a Scirocco or Golf GTI but still offering great performance
