I bought this as the best compromise between driving quality, ride comfort, cabin quality, safety and (of course) economy. Using pump-to-pump fills and odometer readings I am averaging about 65mpg on a daily 40 mile round trip consisting of 25 miles of motorways. The on board computer indicates circa 70mpg but VWs are known to be optimistic on economy. I don't usually go above 60mph because it makes negligible time difference on a 20 mile journey, but on a longer I cruise at 70mph I get a similar consumption with a higher proportion of motorway journeys. The new 1.6 CR diesel is extremely refined and handling is excellent.

It is a great car, with my only complaint being that I would like to have rear daytime lights as well as forward facing ones (per Volvo).
