Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
1.4S
Economical, sturdy and lives up to its reputation.
I bought this on the recommendation of other VW golf and polo owners and having test driven Honda Jazz, Skoda Fabia (also owned and liked for 7 years) and Ford Fusion, and being weary of going everywhere on my bicycle, without my dog. I like the solidness of the vehicle, its size suits me as a single with an elderly greyhound (rear seat passenger) and plenty of space for luggage/shopping in the boot, with the possibility of squeezing my bike in with the seats folded down, though they don't go flat. Things I don't like are to do with comfort rather than efficiency, technicals or economy, though they have proven to be irritating. These are very uncomfortable seats, not supporting my lower back (as the polo does, see later), so lots of cushion experiments, the head restraint pushes my head forward, making it uncomfortable and the distance from the seat to the outside of the car is too far for my short legs, (5'2") causing more lower back issues. The car has currently (3 weeks so far) been in the dealership (still under 12 month warranty) , to have the back seats dried out and the spare wheel well emptied of water and them trying to find out what has caused this - they say there were gaps between the metal sheets which hadn't been sealed properly. I'm enjoying driving the very comfortable Polo 1.2 '62 reg courtesy car and wonder whether that's really what I should have bought. Maybe next time.
