Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
SE 1.4 TSI 5dr Auto Hatchback
It's just what I hoped it would be!
There's already a Mk 7 Golf but it wasn't superseded because there was anything much wrong with the Mk 6. My SE version was a main dealer ex-demo and its standard equipment fit was good including a DAB radio (essential in my view for decent Radio 5 Live reception) and cruise control. I didn't want bigger wheels or "sports" suspension as I value comfort. My car did have some options though; red metallic paint, which looks good, folding door mirrors and fog lights linked to the steering. I wouldn't waste my time specifying the latter if I were to buy a new car.
The 1.4 TSi engine (the 120HP version) in conjunction with the DSG gearbox is both quick, smooth and pretty economical. It steers well, rides well and brakes well. It's quiet inside and very comfortable. HJ is always criticising the DSG auto box for hesitation when pulling away into a traffic stream. I agree it's there but I've never found it a real issue. I understand it's because there's a deliberate computer delay between brake off and power on. So you need to develop a slightly different driving technique. Leave some space in front of you and take your foot off the brake fractionally before needing power on. The gearbox prevents rolling back and there isn't enough power to move you forward more than a foot or two.
The car has proved very reliable and the VW dealership (Vertu VW in Lincoln) has been excellent at fixing a clonk in the front suspension and investigating an apparent engine fault (nothing was found). They also changed the DSG oil FOC after a recall notice was issued. VW offered another year's warranty when the car was approaching 3 years old for a very reasonable £170 - there's nothing like standing behind your product.
All in all, I'm very happy with my Golf and my wife is, too. I'd buy another one but I see no real need to change what I've got.
