VW Golf GT TDi 140DSG

Best all round hatch and great performance (when needed!)

Owned a few MK5 golfs - poverty spec ones. So when I had a budget of £10K to buy a 2nd hand Golf I hunted around for a 2.0 TDi with some toys and ended up with this one. Bearing in mind the car with options would have cost £26K new (which is bonkers for a Golf) then a saving of £16K for a 3 year model is sound.

The interior is well though out, not a mass of plastic buttons (Focus and Kia come to mind) and some nice soft touch plastics. The ipod / media stereo is okay, albeit a little confudding!

The DSG gear box is smooth and responsive, although reversing uphill (I live on a hill and have to reverse in) is somewhat tempremental...otherwise if you give it some beans the car does pull like a train and the 140 BHP on tap has a lot of torque available.

Being an auto the car drives around quite sedately and is comfortable to drive. Having gone from a BMW 1 series, it's a little heavy on the front (low profile tyres) but getting from A2B at warp speed is not my bag entirely!

The car is big enough for 4 adults and a small family and has good leg room and a high interior roof.

Golfs do 99% of most things really well, the 1 series drives better (but has no rear space, small boot, drank fuel and rear wheel drive is awful in the snow), An A3 has a classier interior (but is overpriced in comparison to a MK6) the Focus drives better (but depreciates like a dropped brick) - and is a great all rounder.
