Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
GTD
VW hit the sweet spot with this one!
Practical, quick, economical, reliable - what's not to like?
Ran this as a company car for 3-1/2 years from new and even when visiting dealers looking to trade it against a new 3-series, getting back into the Golf didn't feel like any sort of step down.
It was so good finding something to replace it with was very difficult!
The engine is smooth, refined and even sounds decent - they put a sound generator on the GTD, so it may be slightly artificial but if you didn't know you wouldn't realise.
Its very quick on the move, in gear acceleration is strong and the chassis is tuned wonderfully. On a decent B road its a delight, but it works equally well on long trips up and down the motorway too.
The interior is perfect, it held together well during my ownership and is well thought out. Tartan seat trim may be a little marmite but if you ever ran a mk1 / mk2, as I did, you ought to love them. You can't question the seats comfort or support though, they are unquestionably brilliant in that respect.
Its like a modern day interpretation of a mk2 8v GTI in many ways, and that's about as good a 3-door hatch as there has ever been.
