December 2003
Hello all, its 3.26am this Sunday morning, and ive just got in from a night out on the tiles.
I was on my journey home from town, going along a road approaching a traffic light t-junction, one car behind me: 30mph limit, i was doing less than 40 (in a non-residential area at 3am). Traffic lights go from green to amber as i near the junction.
Too near to stop safely - i really mean this as the road was slippery and i was very close to the junction - i continued through it, and noticed a second or two later that the other car had followed me through aswell, clearly on a red signal, which surprised me slightly, but then it is 3am no telling if the other driver has been on the shandys i thought...
Pull up at next major junction, going to turn onto dual carriageway, which has the choice of two lanes to cue at the lights for. Following car pulls up close behind me, rather than next to my car. I notice it is a silver almera, newish, and there are at least two occupants. Their right headlight is also badly adjusted, dazzling me in my rear view mirror.
Off the lights and onto dual carriageway - 50 limit - the other car stays too close for comfort so i put my foot down to 70ish in an attempt to clear some room - they increase speed aswell, so after one roundabout i stick to 45mph - they do too. At the next set of lights i take a right, which is into my residential estate - not much used other than by aforementioned residents. Surprise surprise, they take a right too. By this time i have established that either they mean me harm, or are undercover police officers (silver car, two occupants, following me etc). I continue through my estate, taking 4 or 5 turns, they do the same, notably without indicating once. I pull into my drive, they stop outside.
Undercover police.
"Sir could you step out of the car please, do you live at this address?"
I do and confirm it is my address
"Have you been drinking at all tonight sir?"
"No not at all, feel free to breathalyse me if you wish officer"
"Ah...we would, but we DON'T HAVE A BREATHALYSER"
they continue...."We have stopped you because you nearly went through a red light, and because of excessive speed on the A405 - have you anything to say for yourself?"
Me:"Erm well i was aware of the red light situation, it was amber, i judged it to be dangerous to attempt to stop for it. You followed me through that right? (Purely attempting to display good observance skills at this point.) Beyond that i was worried about your intentions towards me, that is why i briefly went to 70 on the 50 dual carriageway to try to shake you off."
The reply to this: An increasingly angry "Thats rubbish, your speed was completely independent of us following you, we were a safe distance behind you at all times and you were driving dangerously!"
Followed by long lecture "blah blah blah ive a good mind to get a traffic officer down her to charge you and take you to court, remove your license blah blah blah but this time i'll just give you the verbal warning you be grateful for that sonny"
I struggled to bite my tongue but realised that i was far better off grovelling and accepting a slapped wrist.
NOW THEN :-
Can unmarked police cars run red lights?
Do they not need to indicate?
Are they immune to the offence of tailgating?
And headlight defects?
IF he had pushed this to a charge, surely my (entirely accurate and truthful) account would get this charge quashed?
The ONLY time i broke the law was when i feared i was being followed dangerously by persons unknown who i had reason to suspect intended me harm.
PS Sorry about the mammoth post but i needed to get all the facts down here

Can anyone help?
I want to do an intermediate oil change myself, the car is a 2001 model (not the latest one) are there any complications?
I don't have ramps etc., can it be done simply by reaching underneath? Are the filter and sump nut easily accessible? What size are they?
Sorry for all the questions, but as you may guess I haven't done this sort of thing for a long time.

To JL - Julian,
Could you contact me, please. I would like to get some more detail from you on the question of intermediate oil changes.
Apologies for the long delay in responding.

The topic re blue neon lights in lorries to "allegedly" identify gay drivers made me wonder.
Would it be possible to get a signal / sign printed for us backroomers in the off chance that we are passing each other? Over the years Beetle drivers, caravanners etc etc have acknowledged each other - what about us?
Perhaps even a simple and discreet sticker for the rear window, I'm sure someone could think up a suitable slogan?? Read more
How's this for some suggestions:
BackRoomers do it behind the scenes,
Backroomers do it on the forum/net
My other car is - find out on the backroom!
Watch out for *That Astra* on a motorway near you! (reference HF on the M25 - scary thought) ;)
Mind that Polo - she had enough trouble getting it fixed last time!
For Pink Fluffy Dice sake - Mind your Language!

Battery on the wifes car is still the original and at 10 years old is likely to need replacing this winter.
The existing which is a Unipart and is labelled 12V,680/135 Type 096
In the Haynes manual it reads 680amp /135minutes reserve capacity.
Can anyone interpret that for me to the normal amperage size which I shall need.

Rear screen wiper kit
Does anyone know of a rear screen wiper kit for fitting to a saloon car? We're fed up with poor visibility.

My wife's 306 Sedan also has a wiper as standard, and I have often wondered why this is not standard fit on all saloons, but I have never seen an accessory kit.
I may however know the answer to the latter: I recently asked a local glazing shop to grind a hole in the top glass shelf of my HiFi unit, so I could easily hang a cable tidy. They replied to say that they couldn't, because the glass had been toughened. If they tried, it would shatter.
I guess the same would apply to most car rear windows. If the glass is going to shatter, there's no market for wiper kits.
A few times lately when driving my Escort 1.3 (1997) the lights have gone very bright for about 5 secs and the speed of the wipers has doubled.
Firstly am I correct in thinking this is a problem with a voltage regulator device?
Secondly if it is, where is it and how do I fix it?
Thanks.....Harry Read more
Yup, alternator regulator (in alternator). Get it swapped out ASAP before any damage is done.
I'm driving up to Manchester tomorrow from Devon - weather's rumoured to be nasty but no idea what the traffic might be like! I've done the trip a few times before but first time in the Xsara diesel.
Any tips for long motorway driving? Should I be checking anything in particular before setting off? (eg, oil level (half full), screenwash, power steering and brake fluid, tire conditions etc)
Would you recommend taking anything in particular in the car besides a blanket and coat? (Which I carry anyway.)
All advice appreciated!

Take a mobile and a credit card.
I had an unfortunate incident and ended up with 2 punctured tyres. I phoned the breakdown service that I am with and a patrol was called out, a few minutes later they phoned offering to come out and fit 2 new tyres. Because i\'m a member they would waive the call out charge, 2 new 205/50/16 Goodyear Ventura £176 each, I normally pay £85 each total. How to rip off the stranded motorist, the patrol arrived 1-50hr later, put on the spacesaver, towed me to their local depot. £108 each for 2 Goodyear F1, still not good, but not deleted Rip Off, if you read this deleted you should be ashamed.

Aren't they supposed to be Recovery Services, not mobile mechanics, which I suspect would increase the subscription.
I know that the consumption readouts from on-board computers are not necessarily that accurate but I would have expected that cold weather and low temperatures would have improved my indicated fuel consumption. The fact is that, regularly driving the same 15 mile route in the same manner, my fuel consumption has worsened by about 5 mpg indicated. Any ideas please? The figures are still accpetable but I would have thought that cold weather would have improved the engine's overall efficiency but this does not seem to be the case! Read more
no such a sealed fuel system.Ie fuel evaporate`s the system only allows the unused fuel to return to the tank.the excess fuel vapour exit`s the pipe on top of tank/or through the filling cap unless anyone knows better.I think we are straying from first post.have a good Christmas all nice talking
This has just happened. My sister decided three months ago to trade in her Mercedes C43 for a new C32. The old C43 had served well for nearly 5 years and the Mercedes took it from her and ordered a new C32 to her specification for January delivery. She was able to use another family car so didn\'t mind and was eagerly looking forward to her new blue C32. Lo and behold the Mercedes dealer (bona fide) rang today to say that Mercedes has now stopped production of the C32 to be replaced by a C55 mid next year. One new C32 was in a dealership somewhere but it was the wrong colour and specification. The garage offered to get this car for her but would be happiest to give her her old C43 back again three months later! No price or delivery date for the new C55 yet. Where does she stand? She doesn\'t want her old car back, doesn\'t want a black C32 with funny spec. The dealer has behaved most unprofessionally and very pink fluffy diced off! Read more
Although I have never had any problems with MB dealers who also deal in smart cars I have read some horrendous tales on the smart owners website. The most recent was the inability for dealers to service and carry out diagnostics/ECU upgrades on the lastest smarts as they did not have the software upgrades - the car was launched in March 2003!
I have found on a couple of occasions that asking for their collar numbers does the trick and see's you on your way with no further hassle. these guys would have done well in Berlin back in the late 30s.
