Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2002 - 2009)
320 CDI Elegance
Utterly reliable, comfortable, and excellent for long-distance driving
I bought this car with 7,000 miles on the clock, and it has now done 65,000 miles.
Apart from one collapsed front spring that cost about £300 (both were changed so that suspension was level), it has not had one single fault, not even a bulb blown.
It has had dealer servicing once or twice a year depending on mileages driven, that typically cost £250 to £400. There were a couple of bigger bills to change the transmission oil and brake fluid oil, but I would consider these routine.
The battery was changed after 6 years. Otherwise I had fitted an integrated phone cradle and system, plus heated seats, that have proved very useful and comfortable.
It has sailed through every MOT without incident; plenty of life still in the original brake pads.
I routinely achieve 41-43 mpg on long hauls across France that the car does regularly. The pleasure for me is to fill it with diesel and it will do a complete days driving on one tank of between 500 to 600 miles.
The car was recently complemented since someone thought it was new. The bodywork and paintwork are almost perfect.
A set of winter tyres and wheels was a good addition in winter driving in Europe.
I would highly recommend this car to anyone for the comfort, power, speed, economy, and prestige. My family love it too, it seats four comfortably and the huge boot takes all our luggage effortlessly.
