Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2002 - 2009)
E230 Estate
Everything you expect from a Merc.
I bought this petrol car in Sept 2007 with 33k miles on the clock for £25k. Since then I have replaced the water pump twice and the battery once. I had an issue some ten years ago driving back from the Med when I lost power climbing up a steep motorway but we limped home (in France). Never sure what the problem was but it was something to do with the fuel injection. Quickly sorted out. a It has now done nearly 200k miles. It's the Elegance version and I bought it because at the time we had two Airedales and the BMW 3 series estate was too small. It's hardly elegant now and the bodywork was prone to rust before we moved to France. Three years ago it was again sluggish and petrol consuption had increased by a bit. This time it was diagnosed as a faulty coil. Half the panel lights no longer work and the mechanism for lowering the back seats has packed in but the car still drives well. The gear box oil was changed two years ago and otherwise it has just had regular sevices, no longer with Mercedes but at a local garage. The suspension is not what it was but it is so comfortable and manoeuverable for a large car with excellent all-round visibility. Both my wife and I prefer driving it to the 2013 Skoda Superb we also have but the Merc is heavy on the petrol, perhaps 30 mpg driven carefully, so for any distance travel we use the diesel Skoda. It's my third Merc and I wish I had spent a little more and bought another rather than the Skoda.
