Volvo XC60 (2008 - 2017)
D5 AWD SE
Basically a good car let down by irritating problems
I bought this car because I wanted something safe,4wd and a little bit bigger than my RAV4 but didn't want the anything as big as the xc90. Having owned Toyotas for ten years previous ( a landcruiser and then a RAV4) I fancied a change of manufactor and thought Volvo would give me the reliability that I was used to from Toyota.
First problem is a warning light came on saying the car needed a service this was due to a sensor stating I had to much oil in the engine, aparent,y this is due to the DPF regenerating and dumping fuel into the oil sump raising the level of oil and a very common problem on the xc60. My next issue is the primer around my windscreen started to fail therefore letting water pour in, it was that bad you could almost push the windscreen out, there is quite a few cases of this on the 2009 XC60, Volvo didn't want to know about this and even after I got them to admit it was their primer that failed they still wouldn't do anything about it, a new windscreen costs 750 because of the front cameras etc and windscreen cover doesn't cover leaking screens. Another issue the quality of the interior, the seats aren't hard wearing and there is the annoying rattle of the passenger seat belt hurting the side panel trim when no passenger in there, this is not what you expect on a 30k car. I also have found Volvo dealers to be the worst of any dealers I have ever encountered even worse than BMW and Audi dealers.
On the plus side I have found the 205bhp to be more than adequate for power and the fuel economy to be good with over 40mpg in the summer and late 30's in the winter months, also the boot is more than large enough to cope with the day to day demands of a family of 4, the 4x4 system works well and I've even had the pleasure of pulling a 4x4 Freelander 2 out of the mud.
