Amazing performance but practical.

The design and performance are superb. It is let down by expensive failures which VW are aware of but deny when you are just out of warranty. My GTI was just three weeks out of warranty when the thermostat housing failed. Well known fault according to reports. VW have taken the view that as this will be extremely expensive for them ( what with diesel gate costing millions) so they will keep their heads down and play hard ball. I ended up with a bill for just short of £1000 and no goodwill. As a long term VW owner, California, Polo etc I always admired them for making a goodwill gesture after warranties had expired. No longer!
It’s a Kia or Hyundai for me next.
If you are tempted to buy a used Golf GTI take out an extended warranty when the three year one expires but be warned they are extremely expensive.
