Subaru Outback (2014 - 2021)
2.5 premium
Another excellent Subaru
My third Subaru. Started with a 14 reg Forester which was fault free for 50,000 miles. Moved to an XV 2.0 which whilst also being faultless proved a little too small for my needs and in an idle moment I noticed the local dealer had a 3 year old fully stacked Outback with just 15,000 miles for a good price.
Now had it a year and 10,000 miles. Averaged 33 mpg, will do mid 40s if driven sensibly on motorway runs. Used about half a litre of oil.
Typical bomb proof Subaru, boringly reliable, but its when you drive a car without 4wd you realise just how much difference it makes, especially in autumn winter with slippy leaf covered roads, flood water etc.
The CVT is now more like a traditional auto as you can feel it 'change' between the 7 stepped ratios and there is manual control which is very useful for engine braking,
Eyesight and adaptive cruise is class leading. No low down radars behind the front grill, all is done through cameras which react to brake lights and slowing vehicles. Rear, front and nearside cameras make manouvering in tight spaces easier, whichnis useful as its a large car for tight car parks.
2.5 engine is smoother than the 2.0 and the extra bhp is welcomed, the car will never melt tarmac froma standing start due to the CVT, but once rolling its more than quick enough, especially in sport mode,
One thing I miss over the XV is lack of levels for how agressive the acceleration is when using the cruise control.
Only annoyance is a rattle from the sunroof frame.
X mode is great in snow, living on a hill which is never salted with decent tyres snow isn't a problem.
Plenty of boot space and it has a spacesaver spare fitted, although this is an extra.
