Skoda Octavia (2004 - 2013)
Ambiente 1.6 FSI 5dr Hatchback
Affordable but electrically troublesome
A great car with almost Tardis-like interior space and a huge boot. The seats are the best I have ever sat in. Following an accident I have an ongoing back problem but I have no problem with a three hour drive in these seats. Economy is pretty good too for a 1.6 petrol engine pulling what is essentially a large car. It averages 38-39 on short runs and if I drive like a maiden aunt I can squeeze 45 mpg out of it.
The downsides are it isn't going to win any traffic light grand prixs. It has been very reliable sailing through its MOT test but it has had lots of erroneous warning lights which have been a real headache.
Since fitting a new battery there have been numerous DTC codes which change at will.
The rear wiper can sometimes have a mind of it's own, it will occasionally refuse to work then it will work for weeks without any problem. It's probably just a connection problem which I will address when it dies altogether.
Would I buy another, probably but it would be a diesel for economic reasons. Depreciation isn't so good either but that can be said for a lot of larger petrol engined cars.
