Skoda Octavia (2004 - 2013)
Elegance 1.9 TDI PD 5dr Hatchback
Honest, reliable, roomy transport
In a nutshell, this car has done everything I expected of it. From doing 15,000 business miles per year to holidays in Europe, it has coped with everything thrown at it.
Positives:
- Utterly reliable; no visits to dealer except for servicing
- Good quality interior
- Fuel economy from 1.9 TDi is excellent, averaging 49 MPG with a mixture of town and motorway driving.
- Plenty of room for four adults and all suitcases, with the torque from engine meaning this additional load is not felt under most driving conditions – will easily cruise at 130kph.
- Full-size alloy wheel
- Headlamps convert to continental driving by removing headlamp unit and moving a lever. Removal of headlamp is unbelievably easy. Release a screw, pull a clip and the whole unit pops out making bulb replacement a doddle – other manufacturers should take note.
- Good amount of rear legroom for wheelbase
- Truly exceptional dealer service (Simpson's of Preston) at reasonable rates
Negatives:
- Seat comfort is not the best. There is not enough support in centre of seat and the side bolsters intrude too much.
- Tyre roar is intrusive, although this is my first estate and is a factor. Michelin Pilot Primacy’s do improve things, but the noise becomes tiresome after a while.
- Sound system ‘speakers are of poor quality
- Ride can be 'fidgety' on some roads
With re-designed seats and improved sound insulation, the Skoda would be a class-winner. Unfortunately, these two key elements become very noticeable after some hours at the wheel.
