Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006 - 2015)
2.2 TD4 GS 5dr 4 X 4
Untrustworthy - Intentionally Disables Itself
Central locking system became unresponsive to key fob and car would not unlock. Emergency access manual key/lock was unavailable due to it being on the left hand side (passenger) door, which was inaccessible due to proximity to a wall, therefore car was rendered useless. Landrover technician had to 'force' driver's door open, distorting the driver's door frame - bent it back into shape by hand, bracing his knees against the door card - loud cracking noises. Happened again, so dealer changed transceiver, then sided with Landrover that car is not faulty, because car is designed to lock owner's out to save the battery from going flat, so that car can be started once entered (!). Landrover says car will lock owners out after 28 days, but could be sooner depending on the charge in the battery - i.e. RANDOMLY. Many people reporting similarly on internet (reports of having to break windows, pushing car sideways off jacks to move it, call outs to airport car parks, etcetera). Landrover have fobbed me off and declined to provide a solution for hapless owners. If you've got one of these then NEVER leave it and lock it in a position where you cannot be certain of opening the passenger door wide enough to get fully in as you need to be able to reach the docking station to reset the locked-out condition before any other door(s) (or window(s)) can be opened. I have given a low rating, because it's a perfect booby trap, waiting to spring at any moment - so I have no confidence that I won't be locked out again, without warning, in a challenging situation, and that's why I percieve the car as untrustworthy - if I cannot be sure that I'll actually be able to get into it to use it..
