Hyundai i10 (2008 - 2014)
1.2 Active 5dr
The best car - of many! - that I've ever owned!
Bought new June 2012, £6,995 on the road. Covered 100,000 enjoyable, virtually trouble-free miles since. Two warranty items, which didn't affect my use of the car: (i) early on remapped software to cure problem of engine revving when changing gear, (ii) track-rods (?) tightened up at about 12,000 miles. At 89,000 miles picked up car at airport after 2 weeks holiday to find it misfiring. However, it got us home at night in the rain (100 miles) no problem. Hyundai garage and my local man agreed it was an exhaust valve on the engine - £110 investigation and £240 to replace valve, since when it has run perfectly. The aircon has gradually given up - probably needs re-gassing, but I live in Cumbria, so it's not a major issue like wipers! Still on original exhaust and battery. First set of brake pads lasted 41,000 miles (I'm on third set now); tyres usually last between 20 and 30 thousand miles according to how much I paid for them - current Goodyear 4-seasons (£70 each) fitted at 77,000 and still have plenty of wear on them. One irritation is that the steel wheels rust around the valves, so about once a year the rust needs to be sanded off to stop thr tyres going slowly flat! Never had an advisory or a problem with MOTs. Uses no oil between services (every 12,500 miles). Average annual service/repair costs about £300 inc. VAT. £20 RFT. £260p.a. Comp Insurance. Average 48 mpg - worst ever was 42, and best 54.5 on a long run. Decent boot, and with back seats down I have cleared a house and moved my daughter into a flat. Been to France and Holland several times without incident. Basically: cheap, economical, nippy, easy to park, delightful to drive, quiet at speed, good stereo system....OH, and for anyone worried that it's too small for them, I'm 5'10" tall and 18 stone, so there's plenty of room! For me, at least, it has been the perfect car for the last nine and a half years. I am going to change next year: when my daughter finally passes her test I'm giving it to her, and I'm confident that she'll get a few good years out of it yet!
