Ford C-MAX (2010 - 2019)
Titanium 1.0T EcoBoost 125 S5 S/S 5dr MPV
Very practical family car with premium extras
I was looking for a practical family car that was not too big but had more space than a hatchback. I settled for the 1.0L 125 Titanium C-Max after deciding it had the best mix of quality features V cost of running and purchasing. It is pretty amazing what features this car comes with (although Mrs Bedford isn't quite so pleased with the red LED atmospheric lighting around her feet at night. When this stops amusing me it will be to late to admit I know how to turn it off).
I wanted a model which had good fuel economy, hence I opted for the 1.0L. I feel a little 'had' by the manufacturer claims of achieving 55MPG as although I didn't expect to achieve this my actual MPG of around 40MPG is way short. I routinely achieved the advertised figure in my previous vehicle despite that being 11 yrs old so I know it is not my driving style that is to blame. I also find that when I calculate the actual fuel used it comes out at about 39-40 MPG on mixed driving where as the computer says 41.6. I hardly use air conditioning so this is not the reason for the difference. The computer says I score the highest level for anticipating traffic (not accelerating & breaking) but it claims my gear change and speed are at the worse level (I very much disagree).
I wish I had taken the diesel version on a test drive but in reality I don't do enough miles to justify that so I am pleased with what I have and would make the same decision again. The car is not fast but then it is probably faster than you would expect. I'm not sure if the less powerful version would cope as well but if you mostly do town driving it would be fine. I don't think either engine would fair well if you routinely do lots of long distance motorway driving but I have no concerns about my daily 2x 20 miles motorway trips.
Overall, despite this not being the top variant I am very impressed with the spec of the car considering it is a Ford and not a premium brand. (I had hoped the DAB radio would be more reliable with receiving and remembering stations mind). I have only had it six weeks but I would definitely get another one when the time comes- even if I would test drive more engine variants...
