VW GOLF - VW Golf mk 5 main shaft bearing 4 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hi - I've been told by my vw mechanic that my 51 plate Golf mk 5 is making a wirling noise that is coming from the main shaft bearing, and would need a gearbox remove and strip. Is this something to worry about or is the noise more of a nusicance? Will it lead to a failure? Thanks -

Vauxhall Vectra B 1997 X18XE - Revs slow to fall 10 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Unless the accelerator is released well before the clutch is dipped there is a rise in engine speed when changing gear. This leads to jerky gear changes. I have cleaned the throttle body and the idle control valve. Do the Backroomers have any ideas why this is happening. I can live -
Volkswagen Vento (1992 - 1996) - 1996 1.8 loss of power 12 May 2009 (Forum)
The car runs OK for about 1 hour then I have a loss of power at road junctions etc, sometimes stops and starts first time, sometimes starts after it has cooled down. Have changed plugs, points and leads went Ok on long run then had the same problem again. -
Subaru Forester III (from 2008) - Any roadtests/feedback? 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Anyone out there own or drive the new 2008/9 Forester? Especially interested in the new diesel version - are there any on the road yet? Wondering if the new diesel is strong enough to lug the bigger Forester around capably? Got my eye on one of these for the New Year, subject to lead-times -
I Have a Question - Volume 223 25 Feb 2008 (Forum)
After reading the bollards thread I was reminded of a word my my grandmother used to describe a kerbstone on a pavement - she used the word "parapet" she had no French connection but a strong connection with family that fought in WW1 (the word is used to describe the leading edge of the trench -
2002 Peugeot 406 Wheel Squeek 12 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My 2002 Pug 406 is making a intermittent squeeling/squeeking from the osf wheel. The sound goes away briefly when washed, which leads me to think it may be something to do with brake dust - but something is niggling telling me I'm wrong. It has steel wheels with trims - are they more susceptible -
FIAT Barchetta (1995 - 2004) - Changing the battery 14 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Hi chaps, quick question. When I put a new battery on the Barchetta tomorrow, do I have to use any kind of oil (for example) on the join between cable and terminal, or do the leads just clip and screw on? Anything I should be aware of - dos and don´ts? Apologies if this is a completely daft -
Punto Hesitation 7 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I drive fiat Punto 55SX and lately found that it hesitates for a few seconds each time while driving. Fast or Slow, Cold or Hot, makes no difference. It feels like its going to conk out but then picks up suddenly. This is getting more frequent. I've done all the usual bits, filters, plugs leads etc -
P11 Primera pollen filter 12 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I wonder if P11 Primera has pollen filter ? It does seem to be mentioned on various news groups occasionally, but the car manual doesn't mention it, neither does Haynes manual. Nor does dealer's service schedule include changing one. This leads me to beleive that if it does exist it has never -

BP Ultimate gives 11% power increase 20 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Or does it? BP's promotional material for Ultimate unleaded claims a large increase in acceleration. "it's like upgrading from a 1.8 to a 2.0 litre engine" - their words not mine. Since it's illegal under the Trades Description Act and Advertising Standards to make mis-leading claims, this must -
Squeeky Laguna 17 Jun 2003 (Forum)
1999 'T' Laguna 1.8 RTE Problem being is that when the engine is running there seems to be a squeel similar to a chirping bird coming from the engine. When the car revs faster, the louder and quicker the squeel which leads me to that it is either a belt problem or a bearing that has run dry -
Peugeot 406 1.8 cam lifters 17 May 2003 (Forum)
A while ago my dealer replaced all 16 cam lifters suggesting they were worn and clearly that was not the case. I think they had become aerated and failed to open the valves leading to non starting. I have seen similar problems reported with Rover 800 and Mondeo engines. Not much on Peugeots though -

For those who missed yestereday's interesting article on the confusing state of the petrol industry, unleaded, low sulphur (soon no sulphur) lrp, etc etc. it's worth checking out the article - not sure if it's available on line yet. HJ also makes has his say. For those who need leaded, like me -
Toyota RAV4 - What is this hanging from the front of my car?? 13 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Hello, I've just noticed a little black box attached to a lead, hanging from the front grille of my car. It's about the size and shape of a medium padlock and looks like something electrical. Would anyone know what it is? And is it okay if I push it back through the grille -
Audi A4 B6 - Air con failure 7 Nov 2019 (Forum)
My air con is blowing out warm air until I have been driving for 20 minutes when it is slightly cooler. Firstly the compressor pulley was found to have come adrift and was bolted back on. A refill made a slight improvement and showed no leaks. Does the symptoms lead you to draw any conclusions -
