Vauxhall Vectra B 1997 X18XE - Revs slow to fall - Archie

Unless the accelerator is released well before the clutch is dipped there is a rise in engine speed when changing gear. This leads to jerky gear changes. I have cleaned the throttle body and the idle control valve. Do the Backroomers have any ideas why this is happening. I can live with it but would prefer to fix it.

could be a mass airflow sensor.....i had similar symptoms on a Golf and it turned out to be that - a new MAF sensor fitted and no trouble since.

Could also be caused by an air leak on the inlet system somewhere assuming the 1997 era FI system isn't new enough to shut the fuel off on a closed throttle. Spray around the inlet manifold and various inlet hoses with WD40 with the engine warmed up and ticking over a stuttering or faltering tickover as the WD40 is ingested indicates a leak somewhere.
