Is the box hanging down in the middle or under a headlight? Does any part of it move or look like glass?
It's over towards the driver's side, about 3/4 of the way along the grille. None of it moves or looks like glass, it's just a black plastic box, closed on all sides, with the lead coming out the back of it.
I just don't understand how it made its way out of the car, it's weird.

Looks like it has aftermarket hid xenon headlights fitted . If there’s a plug on the box , disconnect it to see if the headlights stop working.
elekie's usually on the ball, but you don't say what model RAV4. If it's hybrid, I'd be concerned about the 300V, it may indicate working voltage!
I think that's just the wire rating and the manufacturer. 300v is a pretty standard rating.
Thanks, there's no plug on the box, it looks all sealed in. The car isn't a hybrid, it's diesel and it's a 2015 Rav4 AWD Invincible. That's all I know about it!
Is there any additional wiring attached to the battery positive terminal . ? Usually a red lead under the red plastic battery connector cover.
I think there are two realistic options:
1. If you have a Google drive or similar, upload some photos to a shareable folder and put the link on here.
2. Cable tie the mystery box to the grille, drive to a nearby garage and ask them what it is. Unless it's an impact sensor, which it doesn't sound anything like, it's probably not a big issue.

Haha okay won't do that! I don't know what adaptive cruise control is, I do have cruise control in the car. Just the little button that you push in at the side of the steering wheel.
Adaptive cruise control is the type that slows down if you come up behind a slower vehicle - it needs a radar sensor in the front grill area to work.
Thank you, no I don't have that. I'll upload a link to google drive like someone suggested and hopefully get photos up.
Doesn’t look like anything Toyota fitted . No bracket or fixings. Any name or description on the box .? Could be some kind of tracking device ?
It looks like those thick black lines are where the double sided tape used to be. Probably fine to put it somewhere that it won't get hit by any moving parts and secure it in place.
As for what it is....No idea. It would guess at something like Bluetooth or similar, but only because it looks like something someone will have added. Is it possible to trace the wire back to anything?
See if you can follow the wiring up into the engine bay . If it’s attached to the battery , it’s very possibly an insurance tracking box . They are very often attached to side / top of the battery.
Its made in China, the land of Smoke and Mirrors.
Leave it alone. Do not attempt to make any sense of it.
Thanks, I don't know how to follow it up from the bottom where it is but i'll see if I can have a look at the battery. I didn't have this as part of my insurance but it's possible it's from the previous owner? I think this used to be a company car so maybe it was for that...
I had to look this up. I don't know why I would have that on my car, it was never a condition of my insurance!
Thanks, I might just push it back in through the grille then. I can't trace the wire back, it's way at the bottom of the car and I can't see down to it from the top of the bonnet unless I bend down and look through the grille. There is bluetooth in the car alright.

You are right, I went out and looked again and there's a little black square at the top of the grille of the same shape, which it must have been stuck to. The square has a kind of grey plastic cord running out both sides of it but I can't see where it goes. I assume then it's okay if I just push it back in and secure it so it doesn't flop about.
Thanks!

<< I went out and looked again and there's a little black square at the top of the grille of the same shape, which it must have been stuck to. >>
Doesn't help with identification, but if this object has been stuck in place with double-sided, the warm spell has probably made it let go. Certainly a tracker box sounds to me a likely explanation.

Sorry, I'm not very good at describing parts of the car, but it does seem to have been stuck on with tape and the warm weather probably freed it, as you say. I'll stick it back on then. Thank you :)

A tracking device?! That sounds scary! I don't know why one of those would be on my car!

Unless you're the only person who's owned it, probably a previous owner wanted to save on insurance.

Ah that could be it, thank you. It was a company car before I bought it I think. That makes sense.

Yes, it will be a fleet GPS tracker, used by penny pinching managers to make sure nobody is using their fuel card for weekend road trips.
Next time you have a service, ask for it to be removed. Until then, just stick it back where you found the tape. It won't be broadcasting your location to anyone.

That's great, thank you very much!

Thanks, no there's no name or anything on the box, it's blank. Tracking device sounds a bit ominous :/
