Audi A4 B6 - Air con failure - Steveieb
My air con is blowing out warm air until I have been driving for 20 minutes when it is slightly cooler.
Firstly the compressor pulley was found to have come adrift and was bolted back on.
A refill made a slight improvement and showed no leaks.
Does the symptoms lead you to draw any conclusions?
The car is an 03 .

Many thanks

The compressor centre hub bolt adrift is a common issue on all Vag models of this era. However , when this happens , it often rounds off the spline drive to pump so the drive to the pump is inadequate . Pump failure is very common on this model, even if the bolt is ok . The internal workings of the pump can fail and cause contamination of the system. The cost to fix this can be more than the value of the car.

Once again Eleciedoc your knowledge is profound and much appreciated.
The pulley bolts came loose again and had to be lock tited . So even more damage could have taken place.
Any idea how much the repair woul be roughly and would you consider a second hand pump ?

I think you will struggle to find a good working s/h pump . The only way they can be tested easily if they are fitted to the car. You then have the possible problem of contamination.

Someone has suggested that I replace the pulley clutch mechanism Elecie Doc.
What do you think? The part is £64

Not convinced that this will fix your problem, so probably a waste of money and time.

Would your workshop take this job on Elekie Doc if a customer came to you and if so what estimate would you give and conditions .

I have been looking round and can't easily find a replacement for the Audi

Cheers

We used to fix these on a regular basis . If the pump had failed, then there was a good chance the system was contaminated due to the pump self destructing. On a worst case scenario , the car would need a pump, condenser, and expansion tube and a thorough flush. Last one I done was around 10 years ago ,and that came to around £1200. That's using all new parts, but not genuine VAG.

Many thanks again Elekie Doc.

now i understand why there is not much interest in taking on the job.

Does the fact that it works a little when the outside temperature is not higher than around 19 tell you the pump is partially working ?

Cheers,

The symptoms are very confusing but I think it is happening because of loose wire connections in your car. Take your car to the service center for service, they will fix your all problems.

Took the car to another specialist air con engineer agreed there was little point in changing the pulley as the clutch is internal to the compressor.

But he demonstrated that as both pipes were warm the air con is not working at all.

his electronic diagnosis confirmed that the compressor had failed but a replacement may not be the complete solution as Elekie doc has confirmed.

Hello Elekie Doc.

Getting another quote from my VW specialist in Wellingborough who apparently has had some success changing the compressor and refilling the system.

But read somewhere that there is a fuse above the battery which feeds the system and can corrode.

Have you come across this please ?

Cheers

A new pump may be the fix, But it is imperative that whoever does the job must inspect the internals of the 2 pipes attached to the pump and the port holes on the pump. If there is any evidence of grey sludge or debris , then do not proceed any further, it will be a complete waste of time and money. I don’t recall any fuses , relays or connection on top of the battery on an A 4 . I think he is referring to a Golf

Many thanks Elekie Doc for your continuing support. Been looking at a replacement car today. A Honda Civic diesel 2005 with the 1.7 Isusu engine.but after the Audi's smooth ride and quietness it didn't appeal even though the aircon worked.

Yes on my A4 there is the main battery positive cable and also a fuse leading to another thinner cable.

But i assume releasing the pipes to the compressor will release the refridgerant.

So will this mean the air circulation system will cease working when it is reconnected if the pipes are blocked ?

Audi A4 B6 - Air con failure - elekie&a/c doctor

If there is any refridgerant in the system, then hopefully the ac engineer will recover this for re-use. the pipes to the ac pump are solely used for ac cooling ,and nothing else . Blocked, not blocked or contaminated will have no effect on existing heating and ventilation.

An update elekie doc. Bought a second hand pump but the Audi part man said that unless the part number has the same letter after the long number it may not fit.

Mine is a 1/2003 to 3/2003 car fitted with a Denso pump so really hard to find. Sent the one with AB after back.

Do you know if the Denso pump self destructs? If you remember the centre bolt kept falling off.

Cheers

Steve

It’s usually the Sanden pump that gives trouble . I would check the the system for contamination before proceeding any further .
