Volvo XC40 (2018 on)
1.5 T3 Momentum Pro
Simply excellent.
I was initially concerned that the 1.5 petrol would be underpowered. But, my worries were soon set aside when I drove the car for the first time. Sure, it won't win the traffic lights grand prix but, for sheer comfort and, sense of well being, I've never had a car to match it. It's got plenty of power if you keep it in the power band. Luckily, the gearbox has a positive, short throw, which means that making progress in traffic is a breeze, coupled with the surprising power delivery from the 3 cylinder engine. The high driving position also gives a lot of confidence.
It's incredibly comfortable, the seats are superb and, the suspension soaks up bumps with ease. The different drive modes are all well thought out, you really can feel the difference when selecting them. 90% of my driving is done in towns and cities and, it's more than nippy enough for that. But, it's also a decent motorway cruiser as well. Driving along gives a wonderful feeling of inner calm, aided by a very good climate control system, as well as a decent sound system (which has several ways of playing music). For the price, it's a very well equipped car and, unlike other manufacturers, the spec levels are easy to understand.
The exterior and interior design/styling are miles above other SUV's in this price range, it's understated, yet, classy. Once you get used to it, the central touchscreen is very intuitive to use and, eliminates the need for a sea of buttons and switches like my V40 SE Lux Nav had. You can also control a lot of features via the sterring wheel.
My only (very minor) annoyance, is the automatic parking brake but, that's easy to switch off! (Just like other features, if you don't want to use them).
To anyone considering an XC40, I say, get out and test drive one, you won't be disappointed!
