Suzuki Swift (2010 - 2017)
1.2 SZ-L 94 5dr Hatchback
Surprising roomy for passengers, but let down by road noise and firm ride
Had the 1.2 petrol SZ-L for 3 months now (4K miles), plenty of time to learn of it's niggles. Main issues hard ride, tyre noise, no reach adjust on the steering, no lumber support, ludicrous gear change indicator that continually wants you to change up to 5th -which wouldn't be so bad if there was enough torque to pull 5th and it wasn't the largest number displayed on the dashboard, small boot, engine needs revving hard to make sensible progress especially on hills with passengers, satnav always wants an 'agreement' before you can use any of the infotainment, satnav a total joke in Cornwall sending you on farm tracks, the wrong way up slip roads, awkward gap between first and second gears, only got ratchet adjust for seat backrest not twiddly knob - never seems quite right, also raising the seat tips the swab down at the front thus depriving taller drivers of thigh support, hard to creep along at low revs as it appears to run on two cylinders at tickover, has a weird habit of hanging on to the revs too long after you've taken your foot off the accelerator when changing gear, could use 6 gears approx 75mph = 3500rpm.
Now the good bits - cheap to buy, looks good, nice dashboard, good passenger room, should be bulletproof on reliability, it's small - wife loves it for parking, short overhangs ideal for farm lanes the sat-nav likes to send you down, satnav cannot be operated by passenger/co-driver unless the car is stationary, despite often needing to rev the engine to 5000rpm to make good progress fuel economy is still around 50mpg, and the engine seems happy enough at those revs, 5 star crash test rating, light clutch, snappy gear change, lovely leather steering wheel, good steering feel, good brakes, good headroom, reasonable storeage, excellent door mirrors and headlights, good wipers with excellent variable intermittent function, cheap to tax and insure.
