Skoda Octavia Estate (2013 - 2020)
1.4 TSI SE 140ps estate 2014
Practical and economical excellence
I came to the Skoda from a diesel Passat estate that did 8 years and 140k miles. Glad to get back to petrol, and that proved to be a wise move. This is a totally practical and surprisingly responsive drive. Comfortable too, and has been pretty reliable. The only hiccup in coming up for 4 years has been the EPC warning light which came on and put the car in limp mode last summer. It kept doing it, and diagnostics at my local dealer pointed to a new turbo at an eye-watering £1600. I beat them down to £800 with Skoda contrib. But I needed to do a long trip before the work could be done, and the guy in the service dept said 'try running a tank of premium fuel through it first, you'll be OK for a bit'. I did so, still do, and have never had a recurrence. So if you see that issue, feed your motor some posh petrol before laying out money on a new turbo. 10p extra a litre is a small price to pay.
A great car otherwise, and just £30 a year tax.
