Overall reliability

Good ownership experience until I dealt with Hyundai customer services.

I have owned this car from new, great fuel consumption 50mpg+, economical to run and reliable. Recently my wife was locked in the car when the drivers door handle stopped working and she had to ask somebody to open the door from the outside. I investigated about this problem on the Hyundai owners forum and found out this is a common concern and was subject to a service campaign (for cars up to 10 years old) on 2010 cars. I contacted my local Hyundai dealer about the concern and they said my vehicle was not subject to a service campaign the repair would involve a new door mechanism assembly cost about £250 plus fitting. I was not satisfied with this so contacted Hyundai customer services about the concern, they repeatedly told me to call out the AA if my wife was stuck in the car and that my car was not subject to a service campaign, I asked about the 2010 cars with the same door concern but they said they could not comment. I also asked if Hyundai could help with the cost of the replacement part but they said no. I pointed out that it was not necessary to call the AA as the door could be opened by opening the window and opening the door from the outside handle, I am not sure the Hyundai customer services person grasped this as the only response I got was repetition of the advice to call the AA. I sourced just the Hyundai spare cable for under £10 and had it fitted locally for £40. I am in the process of buying a new car, it is a Ford Focus for me next as Hyundai customer services has put me off going near another Hyundai i30.
