Hyundai i30 (2007 - 2012)
1.6 CRDi Comfort 5dr
Fast for a 1.6 diesel, cheap to insure & run, cheaply built & nightmare for some parts
Bought it with 33k on clock, fsh. Now on 84k
Rattly, easily broken pothole hating tin can that only redeems itself by being so cheap to insure & run.
Head unit died after 2 months, clutch went at 70k, anti roll drop links every 15k, fr brake caliper siezed whilst driving, windscreen washer jets are useless, seat belt lock is almost impossible to undo once belt inserted because its jammed in between the seat and console. Suspension parts are a nightmare of "this version is not for the Czech model". Scary light at speed on some roads, though it does follow a line.
fuel filter is jammed behind everything so takes 20mins to change, heater is either cold or "cook this turkey dinner" hot.
c*** visibility over the bonnet and past the A post. About as refined as a 1970s Ford Escort.
Filler cap release is a lottery whether it will open. Has a route for mice to find their way into the cabin - my passat sits for months but never gets mice inside only stuffing acorns into the engine bay - I've trapped a dozen in the i30 and still can't find how they get in.
Good points, handles really well (when parts aren't broken by the roads), does 50mpg on country roads, 6 speed box that covers 20 to 80 in third so rapid down shifts for scary conditions are almost sport car like, turns on a sixpence. No complex electronic systems to fail.
