BMW 3 Series (2005 - 2012)
320i ES Saloon
disappointing overall , but good performance/ fuel economy
DRIVING EXPERIENCE : v. hard ride b/o run flat tyres. BMW tried to counter this with far too soft suspension. I have now fitted sport springs to give it a much improved handling without body roll but harsh tyre experience persists. No room for spare wheel, otherwise I would change to normal tyres ( If you have a puncture you still have to change the tyre soon!). clonking noise rt front suspension which dealer is unable to confirm. Handling good but somewhat feels like a tanker. ENGINE: gearbox disappointing. clutch judders when engine warm, especially under strain ie starting uphill. took some time for BMW to acknowledge problem, but now they admit it's common. they first changed software, but now unpleasant 'driving off' without you being able to dose the accelerator although I admit this reduces the juddering. They finally changed dual mass fly wheel and clutch on garantee, but juddering reappeared quickly afterwards after reversing software update. Good characteristics of engine and v. good fuel economy (320d). Seems to run best on Shell diesel. DEALER: when I bought the car all they were interested in was to sell insurance for paint and wheels (which I didn't). They do not routinely hand out proof of what they have done, unless you pester them. They are arrogant and make you feel that it is impossible that you know what you are talking about. INTERIOR: lack of cubby holes. unpractical shape of boot. Seats uncomfortable - unable to find a good driving position. SPEC: v. disappointing, account for 5-7 grand for 'extras' which are standard with other makes.
