BMW 3 Series (2005 - 2012)
320d EfficientDynamics 4dr Saloon
Economical but not as quiet as it should be.
Having owned a 2005 E90 320D ES (M47 engine) for 6 years I decided to replace it at 101k, a decision that I am starting to question. Without going into the known cam chain problems of the N47 engine, the most noticeable issue with the 320d ED is the level of noise compared to my previous car. The main factor I understand is the fuel efficient tyres (Michelin)which unless the road surface is completely smooth, there is a rumble from the tyres and you can feel it through the steering. The second factor is the drive chain which under acceleration is also noisy, not sure if this is down to the different gearing on the efficient dynamics or the N47 engine, it is certainly not as quiet as the M47. The positive's, the steering is well balanced and handling is good, it can prove incredibly economical (I've managed 76 average mpg)and on good road surfaces is a quiet cruiser. Overall I don't think the vehicle is to the quality of my previous BMW and the level of noise can prove irritating.
