Volkswagen Tiguan (2016 - 2023)
2.0tdi 150 SEL DSG 4Motion
Great car but slightly harsh ride on rough roads
This car replaced a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Dci CVT, and what a change! No comparison between the two cars, the Tiguan is vastly superior in every respect. OK, I accept it is much more expensive, but worth every penny in my opinion. The DSG gearbox is smooth and generally very responsive; occasionally it can get caught out round town and jerk a bit, but not often. Engine is smooth and well muted in the cabin. Power delivery is good and no big lag waiting on the turbo to kick in.
Seats are comfortable in this SEL model, and the material seems to be hard wearing and easily cleaned. Rear seat passengers have commented on how spacious and comfortable it is, something I never heard when I had the Qashqai. Up front there is ample elbow room and the car gives an overall air of space, especially with the standard glass roof on this model. Interior is quiet, with little engine or road noise intruding into the cabin. On the motorway you can get a bit of wind noise from the mirrors, but you only notice this because the rest of the car is so quiet.
Fuel economy is commendable for a fairly large car with 4wd and auto box; I'm averaging around 45mpg, but getting 55mpg on long motorway runs. My old Qashqai with 1.6Dci and auto box struggled to return 35mpg overall, and never reached 50mpg, even on a long gentle run, so the Tiguan is vastly superior is this respect.
The infotainment system is excellent, with a great screen and very responsive to inputs. Sat Nav seems accurate enough, though I don't use it that much, as I'm not often in unfamiliar territory.
My car is fitted with the optional surround camera system, and this is excellent; again, far superior to the one fitted to the old Qashqai. The image quality on the large screen is bright and sharp.
My only gripe with the car is that the ride is a bit harsh on rough or potholed roads. The 19" wheels don't help matters here, and possibly a change down to 18" wheels might improve this, but that would be a very costly exercise.
