Volkswagen Golf (2013 - 2020)
Bluemotion 1.4TSi
Disappointed
Having driven a Mark 6 for three years and 40K miles and really enjoyed it. The time to trade was here and what better than to go for the new model. The reviews were really good, the test drive was fine what was there not to like? Having driven the car now for 1000 miles actually quite a lot.
The car is more noisy inside and the engine has a mini holiday as you pull away from stop. The ride is also somewhat annoying. The fuel consumption is OK at 45 mpg (same as my previous Golf) but the on-board computer will tell you that it is 50mpg since the last refill. The adaptive cruise control is interesting to use and I now why some cars seem to slow very quickly in front of you for no reason and no brake lights or why some cars accelerate into gaps that a kind driver has made for you to pull out into. Keeps you alert though! No problem with that now as that gizmo has died.
There are some other niggles, albeit maybe not deal breakers but they seem to be change for changes sake. Why put the CD player in the glove compartment and make it a single CD instead of the six previously. I now have to put my music onto SD card or my phone because I cannot change the CD without stopping (perhaps that is the idea). The car manual used to have its own slot in here, very neat, but sadly no longer. Keep it in the glove box and there is little space for anything else but they have kept the cooling though. Could use the draw under the passengers seat but it is too small.
Oh and I have not mentioned the electric handbrake or the driver safety device that monitors your driving to tell you when you need a break - (I am now convinced that this is a simple timer that goes off after 2 hours driving).
So I am surprised about the amazing reviews of this car in fairness it is a good car and it might be a whole lot better than others in it's class but I am not convinced yet that it is an improvement on the Mark6
