Volkswagen Golf (2013 - 2020)
SE 2.0 TDI 5dr Hatchback
Magic carpet transport!
Supremely refined, powerful, comfortable and economical car, in which I have now racked up 15,000 miles. Wonderful to drive, especially on a long journey - don't get the leg cramps I used to suffer from in my previous Honda Accord - and so relaxing that it's not a car I get the urge to drive quickly, although it's good to know that the performance, should you need it, is just there under your right foot.
On the downside, the boot could be bigger and 'cubby-hole' space is rather lacking. And the car's over-complicated (at least to me) electronic systems are, frankly, a bit of a pain in the a**e. I know this is the way technology is going, but this is the first car I've ever (in 40 years of driving) owned that's taken more than a couple of days of driving to feel at home in, and the first car my wife and daughter have ever refused to drive 'cos they find it too intimidating. It was about a month before I had got used to it's quirks - like the 'adaptive' cruise control that occasionally insists on slamming the brakes on for no good reason, like when the car three car-lengths in front pulls off into a slip road or turns right and is well out of the way; downright dangerous in my opinion, but according to the VW dealer nothing wrong with the system and no, sorry, you can't switch the 'adaptive' bit off and just have ordinary cruise control.
Reliability OK so far, and very pleased with it's economy: 60 MPG on my 60 MPH mostly dual carriageway and country roads daily commute. But the next Golf I get will definitely have cruise control that lets ME decide when to hit the brake pedal......
